Top 5 God: Books on Gods, God, and Divinity

By Austin Cline, About.com

Does God exist? If there is a God, or any gods, what are they like? Did they create the world or humanity? Are they a source for morality? Every year there are a number of new books about gods and belief in gods - what are they are and any of them worth reading? To be honest, most probably aren't - but a few take a rigorous, critical approach to the topic and are worth considering. Read about some of them here (as well as some of the bad ones).

1. God Against the Gods: The War Between Montheism & Polytheism

Today the dominant religions in the world are monotheistic: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. At one time, though, the dominant religions in the world were polytheistic and only Hinduism remains to carry on any sort of explicitly polytheistic tradition. How did this dramatic shift occur and what has it meant for western culture?

2. The Impossibility of God

Does God exist? There's a great deal of debate on this question and theologians have spent hundreds of years developing many sophisticated (and some not so sophisticated) arguments purporting to prove that their god definitely exists. Nonbelievers have been at work on the matter for far less time, but they have a great deal to show for their efforts.

3. God’s Defenders

Just about all of the central doctrines of the world's major religions are matters of truth or falsehood, not opinion. What this means is that these doctrines are either true or false - but proving them true or false is a tricky matter. While science has been able to demonstrate that most of these doctrines are exceedingly unlikely, it is the nature of science that basic religious beliefs won't be proven absolutely false.

4. Odd Gods

There are a lot of small, new religions in the United States, and it seems that more pop up all the time. What are they and what do they want? Why are people attracted to them? Perhaps more importantly, how are we as individuals and as a society supposed to react to these new religious groups?

5. God? A Debate Between a Christian and an Atheist

Debates about the existence of God fascinate some and bore others; nevertheless, they have occupied a great deal of philosophical, theological, and scientific interest over the centuries. Many of the arguments currently used are very old, while others are based upon recent developments in science and philosophy. Has either side developed an advantage over the other?
