The U.S. House of Representatives has been sharply divided over the choice of its next official Chaplain. House Speaker Dennis Hastert has named a Protestant, Rev. Charles Parker Wright as his choice, and some see this as a "bone" to the GOP's religious right. Others, including the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, demand that a Catholic priest (Rev. Thomas O'Brien) be appointed instead (that he was earlier rejected is regarded as a sign of anti-Catholic bigotry among evangelical politicians..

Currently, the House Chaplain's post is supported by $138,000 a year in public money, just for salary. Taxpayers also fund office support costs, travel and other expenses.

About.com Poll
Should the US House of Representatives retain the post of 'House Chaplain' or get rid of it?

Get rid of it - public money to pay a chaplain is a violation of the separation of church and state.
Get rid of it - it's not a violation of separation, but just a waste of money.
Keep it - if it makes the politicians happy, it's worth the money even if the post may be outdated.
Keep it - the country needs more religion and the politicians need to get back to God.
I don't know.
