Oct. 23, 1998
A sniper killed Dr. Barnett Slepian in Amherst, N.Y., by firing a shot through the physician's window, the first fatality among five sniper attacks on New York or Canadian abortion providers over four years.
September 8, 1998
A flammable or incendiary device was placed or thrown at the back entrance to the Carolina Women's Medical Clinic in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Another device was placed on the roof of the Hallmark Clinic, also in Fayetteville.

New Woman All Women Health Care clinic, Birmingham, Ala.: A bomb explodes at about 7:30 a.m. just outside the door of the abortion clinic, blowing a crater in the ground and shattering windows. An off-duty police officer was killed, and a nurse critically injured in the first fatal bombing of a U.S. abortion clinic. Eric Rudolph is charged but has eluded a massive manhant.

A small fire was set inside a Planned Parenthood clinic in San Antonio, Texas. Damage from the fire was minimal, there was also damage to the door from the forced entry. The clinic has been repeatedly vandalized.

Dr. Jack Fainman was shot and injured in his home in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

A fire was started at the West Alabama Women's Center when an incendiary device was thrown through a hole cut into an air conditioning duct on the clinic's roof.

The Lovejoy Surgi-Center in Portland, Oregon was the target of an arsonist who allegedly drove up to the building in a car recently purchased for $200, ran a hose from a metal drum containing an unidentified flammable liquid into the clinic, ignited the liquid, and left.

A flammable liquid was poured into an air conditioning vent on the roof of the Piedmont-Carolina Medical Clinic in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Peter Andrew Howard was arrested after allegedly driving his truck through the doors of the Family Planning Associates clinic in Bakersfield, California. Howard allegedly attempted to ignite containers of propane and gasoline he was carrying in the back of his truck.

Office and medical equipment inside the Reproductive Services and Adoption Affiliates clinic in Tulsa, Oklahoma was shot with a handgun. This was the third attack at the clinic in five weeks.

Atlanta Northside Family Planning Services: A bomb explodes at about 9:30 a.m. outside an office building housing the abortion clinic. About an hour later, while police and ambulance workers are still at the scene, a bomb explodes near a large trash bin in the parking lot. Seven people are injured. Rudolph is charged by federal authorities in October 1998.

Bill Baird, a veteran abortion rights activist, was shot at outside his home on Long Island. He was not injured in the attack. This was the second attempt on his life in two years.

John Salvi opens fire with rifle inside two Boston-area abortion clinics, killing two receptionists and wounding five others. Sentenced to life without parole, he kills himself in prison in 1996.

Dr. John Bayard Britton and his volunteer escort, James H. Barrett, slain outside Pensacola, Fla., abortion clinic. Barrett's wife, June, wounded in the attack. Paul J. Hill, 40, a former minister and anti-abortion activist, convicted of murder and sentenced to death.

Dr. George Tiller shot in the arms as he drives out of parking lot at his Wichita, Kan., clinic. Rachelle "Shelley" Shannon convicted and sentenced to 11 years in prison.

Dr. David Gunn shot to death outside Pensacola, Fla., clinic, becoming the first U.S. doctor killed during an anti-abortion demonstration. Michael Griffin convicted and serving a life sentence.
