The United Church of Christ is a Protestant denomination which has been
associated with "mainline" Protestantism. UCC was formed in 1957 as a union
begtween the General Council of Congregational Christian Churches and the
Evangelical and Reformed Churches. Today, the UCC is characterized by a
relatively liberal perspective on theological matters and active participation of
lay members in church organization and governance.
