Tomas de Torquemada

Dates:
Born: 1420
Died: September 16, 1498

Biography:
A Dominican monk, Torquemada joined the Inquisition in 1482 and later served as the Spanish Grand Inquisitor under Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. He himself was descended from Jews, but he encouraged the Spanish rulers to expel the Jews from Spain, something they did in 1492. Higher authorities made a few attempts to restrain him, but he pursued heresy and promoted the Inquisition with unusual force, being personally responsible for the execution of at least 2,000 people.
