Definition:
The Old Catholic Movement is a collection of parishes and diocese in the United States
and Europe which holds to a very traditional, orthodox view of Christianity and
in opposition to many of the developments in the established Roman Catholic
Church centered in Rome. Its roots can be traced back to Jansenism in the 18th
century, but it was officially formed in 1879 by a group of bishops who opposed
the declaration of papal infallibility at the First Vatican Council.
The liturgy in Old Catholic churches is the traditional Roman Catholic rite, although clergy are allowed to marry. Churches are divided up along national lines and the bishop of Utrecht presides over conferences. The Roman Catholic church recognizes the validity of Old Catholic ordinations, but does not accept their right to consecrate bishops.
