Biography:
Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556) was a relativelly obscure academic who provided Henry VIII
just the sort of advice he wanted on the issue of divorce. As a consequence, Henry
made Cranmer the Archbishop of Canterbury after he severed ties with Rome. In 1549
Cranmer created the Book of Common Prayer, which remains today the basic book
of religious services for the Church of England.
After Henry died, Cranmer became even more readical in his Protestantism and he was encouraged in this by the fanatically Protestant Edward VI. Cranmer was eventually executed by Mary Stuart - nicknamed "Bloody Mary" because of her violent persecution of Protestants.
