Definition:
The Capuchins are an autonomous branch of the Franciscan monastic order in the Roman
Catholic Church. The Capuchins were formed in 1525 by Friar Matteo di Bassi (1495-1552),
a Franciscan monk who sought to return the Franciscans to their original simplicity
and spirituality. Created at the beginning of the Counter-Reformation, they helped
the Jesuits revive Catholicism in areas where Protestantism had gained a following.
Their name is derived from the term capuche, which refers to the long, pointed hood which the Capuchins wore and which was similar to what St. Francis wore. The reason why they took that hood as their symbol was because they were formed for the purpose of returning to the original spirituality and austere practices which were part of St. Francis' life.
