Definition:
The word proletariat comes from the Latin proletarius, which means "belonging to the
lowest class of Roman citizens." Karl Marx and other critics of capitalism used it to refer to the
class of citizens who earn their living through industrial wages. These people possess
neither capital nor production means, so thus must sell their labor to those who do possess such
things.
