Definition:
The Federalist Papers were a series of newspaper essays written anonymously by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and James Madison. They wrote these pieces in an effort to explain how and why the Constitution was good in the hopes of helping it get ratified. Today, the Federalist Papers are an important source of information about what the authors of the Constitution believed it to mean and what they wanted to accomplish.
