Definition:
Located in northern Scotland, Loch Ness is one of a series of interlinked lochs
(lakes) which run along the Great Glen. The Great Glen is a large geological fault
zone which runs across the country. For perhaps as long as 1,500 years, people in the
area have believed that a large beast has lived in Loch Ness. Explanations for the existence
of such a creature include ancient aquatic dinosaurs, giant fish, and other candidates.
Believers have a long list of sightings to rely upon, including a famous photograph taken by a surgeon in 1934. Unfortunately, a deathbed confession in 1993 revealed that this photograph was a fake. Deliberate attempts to find the creature have come up with nothing. Extensive sonar surveys of the loch have not revealed the presence of large creature. Believers maintain that the depth and size of the loch allow for underwater caves where a creature might hide - but the persistent lack of reliable evidence should incline any rational person to dismiss the existence of such a beast, but the income from tourist revenue makes that very unlikely.
