Grahamism
Founder:
Name: Sylvester Graham
Born: 1794
Died: 1851
Profile:
Grahamism was an alternative medicine system popular in the 19th century that was
predicated upon the idea that, if left alone, the human body will naturally keep itself
healthy. Illness is the result of not only injury, but a failure to "live right" - most people
were judged to do a poor job at eating the right foods while spending too much time
eating the wrong foods. The result was poor health.
Restoring good health did not require the intervention of medicine - on the contrary, medicine would only make things work. Instead, good health could only be restored through a strict regimine of healthy living and healthy eating. Included under the concept of "healthy living" was the avoidance of any immoral activities - Graham believed that good physical health also depended upon good moral and spritiual health while poor health was often also the consequence of immoral living. This was, then, a type of Puritan or Victorian physiology where morality and medicine met.

What is Alternative Medicine?
There's an awful lot in the news and in society about "alternative medicines" these days. By some estimates, it's an industry doing between $15 and $20 billion annually - and growing! But what is alternative medicine - how does it differ from scientific medicine and why do people use it?Skepticism & Critical Thinking
This is the main index for issues dealing with skepticism, critical thinking, logic and arguments. The first section is Critical Thinking itself - how to think about claims and arguments you hear, how to critique arguments, and how to formulate your own arguments such that they are more likely to be sound and valid. The second section is about Skeptical Investigations - the practical application of the critical thinking skills covered in the first section. Here you will find critiques of things like astrology, alternative medicine, parapsychology, the New Age and more.
