blue-green algae

 Related Terms
• alternative medicine

Definition:
A couple of companies have attempted to market blue-green algae as a cure-all for just about every ailment which people might suffer from. In addition to health problems, it is also claimed that blue-green algae will improve mental clarity and concentration, make you more awake, improve memory, help you lose weight, and more.

All of the claims made on behalf of blue-green algae are essentially the same as the claims which have always been made about snake oil. Customers are promised everything under the sun, even though blue-green algae has not been proven to do anything important in any clinical trials and even though the products have no real nutritional value. Even worse, blue-green algae can contain toxic substances which could damage the liver.

Skepticism & Critical Thinking
This is the main index for issues dealing with skepticism, critical thinking, logic and arguments. The first section is Critical Thinking itself - how to think about claims and arguments you hear, how to critique arguments, and how to formulate your own arguments such that they are more likely to be sound and valid. The second section is about Skeptical Investigations - the practical application of the critical thinking skills covered in the first section. Here you will find critiques of things like astrology, alternative medicine, parapsychology, the New Age and more.
