Definition:
The word tanna is a Hebrew word which literally means "repeater" or "reciter." Other forms of the word include tannaitic (adj.) and tannaim (pl.).

A tanna is a Jewish sage from the same period as Hillel up to the compilation of the Mishnah (200 CE) who acted mostly as a scholar and a teacher. Groups of tannaim created the Mishnah, the Tosefta and the halakic Midrashim.
