Definition:
Gabriel is an angel who has played an important role in Jewish, Christian and Muslim
traditions. In 1 Enoch 20:7 he is listed as one of the seven archangels. Because of his
proximity to God, he is often regarded as an intercessor, for example as one who
intercedes on behalf of those suffering from evil. In Christianity, Gabriel delivered the
news to Mary that, even as a virgin, she would give birth to Jesus. In Islam, Gabriel
dictated the Qur'an to Muhammad.
