Definition: Technically this means "consensus," and refers to the consensus of legal scholars at a school of Islamic law. Over time it has also come to mean the consensus of all Muslims on a particular religious issue - but is only followed by the orthodox Sunni tradition. The sectarian Kharijites reject it, as do the Shi'ites, who have substitued obedience to the Imam.
