Biography:
George Santayana was a Spanish-American philosopher who wrote a great deal about the importance of aesthetics in human life, but is perhaps better known for arguing that a will to believe comprises an important aspect of how people acquire knowledge. Santayana spent his last years in a convent in Rome. He said that he felt a deep attachment to Catholicism because of its historical and aesthetic qualities, even though he also described himself as being entirely "divorced" from religious faith.
