Definition:
Realism usually refers to the doctrine that the objects of our knowledge have a real existence outside and independent of our minds. Realism can be contrasted with idealism or solipsism.

Realism can also refer to the idea that univerals exist independently of any particulars which have them. In this case, realism is contrasted with nominalism.
