Dates:
Born: July 26, 1875 in Kessewil, Switzerland
Died: June 6, 1961 in Zurich, Switzerland
MD from the University of Zurich: 1902
Biography:
Carl Gustav Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist who started out as a follower of Sigmund
Freud, but he later broke away from Freud's ideas and methods, in particular Feud's
theories regarding infant sexuality.
Jung is perhaps best known for the development of his ideas on archetypes. According to Jung, there are certain ideas which we all share in a collective human unconscious. These ideas or principles are his archetypes, figures which keep recurring in human culture, art, religion, and beliefs.
Joseph Campbell, in his writings on religion, relies heavily on Jung's theories about the human unconscious. Jung was himself very interested in religion, and his dissertation for the University of Zurich was on the psychology and pathology of occult phenomena.
