Biography:
Charles Bradlaugh was a British orator who founded the National Secular Society in 1866 in the hopes of providing a more organized and positive leadership to the freethought movement than had previously been available. He was elected to the House of Commons as a Liberal in 1880, but he was refused his seat, in part because of his objections to taking an oath of allegiance. He finally was able to take his seat in 1886, but his fight left him financially and emotionally drained.
