Definition: The term sutta is used to refer to traditional discourses believed to have come from the Buddha. Suttas have been collected into a set of scriptures known as the Sutta-pitaka. Suttas always open with the words "Thus I have heard. Once the Blessed One was staying at..." What follows is a set of instructions or insights which are believed to come from the Buddha or, sometimes, a few prominent monks or nuns.
