German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer was born in Danzig, Germany (now in Poland).

Geologist Sir Charles Lyell died.

Black evangelist William J. Seymour arrived in Los Angeles and began a series of revival meetings. This "Azusa Street Revival" which would later grow at the Apostolic Faith Mission located at 312 Azusa Street in Los Angeles was key in the development of American Pentecostalism.

A 5-year-old boy was installed as the 14th Dalai Lama.

Jawaharalal Nehru, leader of India's Congress Party, hails the British government's decision to withdraw from India by June, 1948, as "wise and courageous."

Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter died in Washington, D.C.

Rioting Hindus killed at least 3000 Muslims in Assam, India.

Argued: County of Allegheny v. ACLU Greater Pittsburgh Chapter
The Supreme Court ruled that while a creche display on public property was unconstitutional, a menorah display on another piece of public property was not.
