Censorship A common theme found among radical/religious right groups is an effort to censor other people's speech, either because it opposes their own views or because they consider that speech to be somehow "immoral" or "obscene." Predictably, the history of obscenity laws shows just how often "obscene" has been the label of unpopular political or social views. Public schools are a common battleground which experiences repeated efforts to ban literature, textbooks, sex education, evolution, and other topics which are judged anti-Christian or anti-American (often the same things, of course). Other publicly funded media of expression like the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Endowment for the Arts are also frequent targets.
"I am aware that America is and must always be a land of freedom including freedom of speech. But there is a right time and place for everything." -Beverly LaHaye, Concerned Women for America
"What we are up against is not dirty words and dirty pictures. It is a philosophy of life which seeks to remove the influence of Christians and Christianity from our society." -Don Wildmon, American Family Association
"Neither the label "fiction" nor the First Amendment gives Universal [Studios] the right to libel, slander and ridicule the most central figure in world history." - Jerry Falwell, commenting on the movie "The Last Temptation of Christ"
Media The media play major roles in the development of our society: in the very act of selecting which stories to cover, and how much and for how long, by selecting which books & films to review, by selecting which music to air - through all of these things the media institutions effectively define what is and is not important in our society. Furthermore, in so doing, the media manages to frame the context of any debate and control the key terms being used. Once the media starts labeling a group in a certain way, it will become difficult to change public perception, if it is possible at all.
"ABC, CBS, and NBC [have] Declared War...on the Movement...We cannot let a handful of network executives and Hollywood writers, actors and directors poison America with their godless attitudes, which are anti-religion, anti-family and anti-life." - National Right to Life Committee
"...television is undermining the Judeo-Christian values you hold dear and work hard to teach your children." - American Family Association
