By far the most prominent and famous site in Athens and perhaps in all of Greece is the Parthenon on the Acropolis. For many the Acropolis in Athens is a veritable symbol of the ancient world generally: it says something about ancient religion, ancient culture, ancient architecture, and ancient life.
A massive temple dedicated to Athena the Virgin (Greek: parthenos), it was built between 447 and 438 BCE on the site of two earlier temples to Athena. The architects responsible were Ictinus and Callicrates working under the direction of Phidias, three people who led the reconstruction of the Acropolis generally and the building of many works around Athens.
