At the Battle of Ramleh a force of 500 led by King Baldwin IV attempted to stop Saladin at Ascalon, the same site where an Egyptian relief force was defeated almost one hundred years before. He failed and the Egyptian army was able to bypass the Crusaders, continuing on towards the goal of Jerusalem. Baldwin was later able to join up with Templars from Gaza and surprise Saladin from the rear. The Egyptian army was routed and Saladin himself barely escaped.
