Godfrey De Bouillon, the Margrave of Antwerp, was a direct descendant of Charlemagne, and brother of Baldwin of Boulogne (the future Baldwin I of Jerusalem). Godfrey was a the primary leader of the First Crusade, thus making it a largely French war in practice and causing the inhabitants of the Holy Land to refer to Europeans generally as Franks.
