It doesn't make a great deal of sense to start debating the existence of God before having a clear understanding of the nature of this debate itself. Being clear on what is being debated (God) is certainly vital, but no less vital are questions like whether there is any point to the debate in the first place, the "ground rules" for this debate, and the purpose for debating. Without having those in place, you're much more likely to just talk in circles and never get anywhere.

Does God Matter?
The question of whether or not there exists some sort of god is not one which should necessarily preoccupy the minds of atheists all of the time, but it is one to which we should return from time to time. Theists - especially Christians - regularly challenge us with all sorts of arguments and ideas which supposedly demonstrate that some sort of god definitely exists.

Who has the Burden of Proof?
The concept of a "burden of proof" is important in debates - whoever has a burden of proof is obligated to "prove" their claims in some fashion. If someone doesn't have a burden of proof, then their job is much easier: all that is required is to either accept the claims or point out where they are inadequately supported.

Why Debate The Existence of God?
There is a common perception that there must be "something more" to atheism than simply disbelief in gods because of the fact that atheists are so often engaged in debates with theists. After all, what's the point of debating if not to convert someone to some other philosophy or religion?
