Preacher Asks God for a Sign. Lightning Strikes

Sunday July 6, 2003
It's not uncommon for preachers and religious believers of all types to ask God for a sign: tell us what to do, tell us where to go, tell us what to believe. Usually, nothing happens - or if anything happens, it's highly ambiguous and is interpreted in whatever manner is most convenient. Every once in a while, however, something really dramatic and interesting does occur - and that's what the First Baptist Church in Hardin County, Ohio, experienced recently.

During a sermon, a guest evangelist asked for a sign from God... and the church's steeple was hit by lightning. According to news reports, services resumed shortly afterward but then... people realized that the church had been set on fire and they had to flee. The total damage was estimated at $20,000.

So, what kind of sign was this? To stop having guest evangelists? Do build a new church? Do find something better to do on a Tuesday evening?
