Introduction to the Book of Joshua

The Book of Joshua may be one of the most violent books of the Bible, even given Old Testament standards. The Book of Joshua is about the Israelite invasion of Canaan, an invasion that requires the Israelites to slaughter every person living there. Under Joshua's leadership, the Israelites take the land away from those living there because they believe Yahweh promised it to them.

The article makes no mention of the question of whether the events described in Joshua actually happened. There is little or no evidence that they did.

Bible stories are called fiction for a reason. The bible recounts scare stories told around the camp fire while the sheep and goats chewed their cud. These herders believed the earth to be the dominant body in the universe thus putting the lie to the bible in the opening sentence. It would have made more sense for it to begin “It was a dark and stormy night” than “In the beginning god made the heaven and the earth”.
