Wiccan Requests Holiday Off, Gets Fired Instead

Thursday July 13, 2006
Rebecca Sommers was an employee at the Schaumburg, Illinois, office of Crawford & Company Inc., a Georgia-based insurance adjusting firm. She claims that she was called a "devil worshipper" by another employee and then eventually fired after daring to ask for a Wiccan holiday off. She's now suing.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports:

Sommers, an accounts analyst, said when she requested a day off for a Wiccan holiday, she was told by a manager to keep her religion "to herself." She said another supervisor who knew she practiced Wicca called her a devil worshipper in front of other employees.

Sommers said that before revealing her religion she received a favorable review and a bonus. But after her supervisors knew about Wicca, she started getting warnings and told she wasn't returning customer calls fast enough.

I have no idea whether the accusations here are true or not, obviously, but there isn't any question but that they are very plausible. It's a sad comment on the state of Christianity in modern America that it takes absolutely no effort or stretch of the imagination to think that Christians would do what is described here — and worse.

If the accusations are true, I hope that the company pays a stiff price for what they have done. This sort of Christian bigotry needs to die a quick death.

i dealt with similar BS in the USAF for being agnostic. On Sundays in Basic, the Xians got to go the chapel and sing and dance away from the eyes of drill sergeants, those who didn’t go were expected to do chores around the dorm/base. i opted to go to the buddist services to get out of the work, that was neat. Later i went to the church services because they were apparently a lot of fun and about the only way to get close to a female trainee.

The point is Xians don’t see anything other than Xianity, Islam and Judaism as religion. Everyone else is a heathen devil worshipper.

i hope this woman sues the company into bankruptcy. This is a chrystal clear case of religious descrimination.

Austin Cline, your comments regarding Christian behavior is discriminative garbage. First of all no where in this case does it state that the perpertrators of the name calling of this woman who is fired for her religious, is christian. It simply is the christian princible that irates you and motivates your agnostic hatred. These articles are poorly done and quite a waste of time, with virtually no substantial argument and leg to stand on. Good luck in your search for the truth.

It would be nice if you could support your claim.

First of all no where in this case does it state that the perpertrators of the name calling of this woman who is fired for her religious, is christian.

It isn’t necessary. Atheits and Jews aren’t going to accuse a Wiccan of being a devil worshipper. Christian animus towards Wiccans is widespread and well-attested. Christians are a majority in America. There is no reason to think that the people involved here were not Christian and every reason to think they were.

It simply is the christian princible that irates you and motivates your agnostic hatred.

What “christian principble” are you talking about?

These articles are poorly done and quite a waste of time, with virtually no substantial argument and leg to stand on.

Can you support this claim?

Good luck in your search for the truth.

Thank you.

This article is a perfect example of what I’m looking for for my research paper on religious discrimination. I only wish they gave better sources, because the original source is not available from this website. I think they should fix that.

I believe her, hope that company gets sued to the full extent for their repulsive and disgusting discriminatory practices. Notice the decline in attitude towards her after they discover she’s a Religious minority.

“The point is Xians don’t see anything other than Xianity, Islam and Judaism as religion. Everyone else is a heathen devil worshipper”

Of course since Jews control most of the money, and Islam and Christianity have the largest numbers of adherents. Numbers are the ONLY thing that make the so-called “great” religions “great”. Any so-called “religion” that advocates stoning witches, gays, atheist, people who work on Saturday, etc to death are automatically false, or practice Human sacrifice, and witch burnings I’m counting as Human sacrifice.
