Discussion: Why Have Kids?

A forum member writes: I can (sort of) understand why those that follow the dogma of religion bring children into this world. Either/and/or they believe their God wants them to be "fruitful and multiply"" or bear as many children as 'He' gives them or because they will sooner or later go on to heavenly reward. Now for those who do not believe in a god nor an afterlife, why kids? Is it to have immortality through the passing down of one's genes? Biological imperative? To create a circle of people to travel down life's road together?
