Humanism and Politics

Toward a New Political Humanism Recently Received: Toward a New Political Humanism, edited by Barry F. Seidman and Neil J. Murphy. Publisher: Prometheus Books.

Where does or should humanism stand with regards to major political issues like terrorism, national security, gay marriage, world poverty, etc.? Indeed, should humanism even engage in active political debates or should it instead focus on more abstract philosophical matters? Humanism actually has a lot to offer discussions on these and a wide range of issues; contrary to the complaints of the Christian Right, organized humanism hasn't had much impact on politics as of yet. Perhaps that should change.
