Conservative Christians are strong supporters of Israel - not so much because Israel is democracy or anything, but rather because the existence of Israel is key to the fulfillment of biblical prophecies. Some friends, huh? Well, there are Israelis who don't mind this sort of friendship and because of that they are giving an award to one such Christian: Pat Robertson.
The Chicago Tribune reports:
The award is given every year by Israel's Tourism Ministry to an American who has demonstrated strong support for the Zionist state. ... [Tourism Minister Benny] Elon praised Robertson on Wednesday as a leader of a movement that has "saved Israel's tourism from bankruptcy." ... "Our alliance with American Christians is growing," Elon said in a telephone interview. "When the streets of Jerusalem were empty of tourists, the Christian community continued to come."
Elon recently called upon Christians to "go from mosque to mosque and bring the Muslims into the light," so he isn't any more popular among Muslims than Robertson is. Naturally, Muslims see this award as simply an example of one anti-Muslim fundamentalist praising another anti-Muslim fundamentalist. I'm not sure that such a perspective is far off the mark.
