Mormons Still Baptizing Dead Jews

Tuesday December 23, 2003
Mormons don't just baptize new converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, they also baptize dead people - by thousands and the tens of thousands. According to Mormons, this gives them a chance in the afterlife of moving on to heaven. Members of other religions, however, see this as an insult - particularly Jews. In 1995 the Mormon church agreed to stop baptizing dead Jews, but apparently they've violated that.

This Jewish Week reports:

Ernest Michel, a former executive vice president of UJA-Federation of New York who helped broker the 1995 agreement, said his attempt to convince the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to remove Jewish names from its database of 400 million names has been rebuffed by the church. Just a year ago, the church rededicated itself to ending the practice of baptizing dead Jews and to removing the names of those already recorded.
“In accordance with our interpretation of the agreement, they have violated it,” said Michel. “We have reached the point where we are now going public. There is no point in meeting with them again. My hope is that the church will understand we are serious about this and will not just sit by while the church posthumously baptizes Jews — not just Holocaust victims but all Jews, including prominent Israelis.”

Why can't they just leave others alone and go about their religion on their own? Perhaps it isn't strictly necessary that they remove the names of people who never should have been added in the first place, but it would go a long ways towards showing that they actually have some respect for the beliefs of others.

Thanks to "Gullibility" for pointing out this story...

How do I find out if they are doing this to members of my family.
Is there no sanction or government ability to get them to stop. This is an insult to everyone.
Mormonism is not a religion…. it is a cult constructed by a man who use to be a Mason. The Mason’s kicked him out. Then he took their hand signals with him to build his so called church and claims them as his own. He was run out of the East for good reason.
Brain washing is all it is. Women are still considered lesser people put here to make babies to increase the numbers of the cult.

my husband is Mormon ( yes our discussions get quite lively )and he says it is not so the Mormon gets a better chance to heaven, but the dead person.Hmmmmmmmmmm how can ANYONE take it upon themselves to preach to anyone else how they should gt to heaven???? The Jewish faith has been around longer than Christianity ( I am not Jewish , so can the Mormon’s say their right is best?
Do we now need government intervention to prevent this practice? Or do we now need to make it part of the headstone to leave us alone?
Believe it or not there are millions who do not ( unfortunately ) believe in God and want no part of him. Are they to be baptized against thier wishes? This just seems to be to me to be the ultimate in identity theft, and should be prosecuted as such.

Um…who cares what silly rituals foolish people do? I think it’s hilarious that people are “insulted” by empty acts done by silly people.

Seriously? So, a bunch of Mormons say a prayer and sprinkle water on – what? – a list of Jewish names? So what? Who cares?

In other words: “Hey you Mormons, what you think about god is all wrong and your theology is screwed up, but stop doing those empty, pointless, invisible rituals, because god, as gullible as he is, might confuse our dead believers with your dead believers.” (And we can’t have that!)

What an indictment on all believers. If god and your faith were real, it wouldn’t freaking matter what people of other faiths did.

How do I find out if I have been baptized by a cousin without my consent?
