Bush's War on Sex

Saturday December 6, 2003
Why is the Bush administration waging a "war" on sex and sexuality? Talk of a "war" is rather extreme, but it seems to be accurate considering just how much money and effort is being invested into denying basic facts of life, not to mention mis-educating children across the country

Roger Libby writes for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer:

As the Sexuality Information and Research Council of the United States repeatedly has argued, research indicates that comprehensive sexuality education helps teenagers put off the age of first intercourse and sexual activity is more likely to be safer sex with condoms being used. Abstinence-only programs may scare a few teenagers to wait for pleasure, but most won't wait until marriage, and fear is a poor and unhealthy motivator for responsible behavior. Many will acquire STDS and/or be involved with unwanted pregnancies. Must this be the price to pay for pleasure?

Actually, I would argue that this is exactly the case: it's a matter of religious doctrine for many that when people transgress God's laws on sexuality morality, they should be punished. Things like contraception are opposed precisely because it allows people to have sex without negative consequences. This is regarded as a very bad thing and as a sign of how bad things are in America.

Research would be a far better basis for any education about sex-including gay and lesbian issues.

That's true - but we must keep in mind that one of the fronts in the "war" on sexuality is to stop such research in the first place. The less we know about sexuality, the less facts and science can be used to contradict religious beliefs.
