One of the points on which Islam is criticism by both Muslims and non-Muslims is the treatment of women. Under Islam, women often must remain covered, are denied contact with non-related men, can be denied the ability to get jobs and education to the same extent as men, are treated as having less political or social worth than men, and are discriminated against in a variety of ways.
In Saudi Arabia, there are many restrictions on what women can and cannot do, can and cannot wear. In fact, their lives are restricted in a myriad of ways that does not occur in many other Arab Muslim lands. And, while people are generally obedient while in that nation, there are many rules that they abandon once they leave.
Many argue that the restrictions Islam places on women - like wearing a veil or being denied contact with men they aren't married to - makes them second-class citizens. Many Muslims, including women, counter that suppressing public sexuality and sexual temptation gives women more freedom. What do you think?
