Religion, Violence, and Discrimination: News, Events, Information
Religious believers tend to see their faith as a source of peace and good, but very often religion is also a source of hatred, division, bigotry, and violence. There are a lot of events and stories where violence is committed in the name of religion: people are killed, driven out of their homes, or simply treated like second-class citizens. Where is this happening and why?
Catholic Pilgrims in Glastonbury Attack Pagans
It's not common to hear about Catholics launching into violent attacks against non-Catholics or non-Christians. I wont say that it never happens, and it certainly happened in the past, but these days mobs of angry Catholic bigots is a rarity. That's a good thing, too, given what pagans had to endure at the hands of a Catholic mob that wanted to 'cleanse' Glastonbury of their presence.

Surveys Show Many Americans Prejudiced Against Muslims
Americans like to think of their nation as a bastion of liberty and equality, and while America's political principles have certainly been based upon such ideas the truth is that Americans themselves have often been willing to abandon those ideals. Today, for example, many Americans are inclined to deny equality and liberty to the Muslims neighbors simply because they are Muslims.

Militant Christians Executed in Indonesia
Usually when we hear about militant religious believers who are arrested for violence and executed for their crimes, I think that most people will imagine that they are reading a story about Muslim extremists. Muslims aren't the only religious believers in the world who are wiling to engage in violence for the beliefs, however. Christians will do it sometimes as well.

Christian & Jewish Intolerance of Muslims in Florida
There is increasing hostility towards and intolerance of Muslims in America. We don't hear about it much and I think that Muslims, aware of the problems around them, are generally keeping a low profile in order to avoid trouble. Sometimes, though, trouble seems unavoidable: like the Christians and Jews trying to stop "terrorists" from building a new mosque in Florida.

Wiccan Requests Holiday Off, Gets Fired Instead
Rebecca Sommers was an employee at the Schaumburg, Illinois, office of Crawford & Company Inc., a Georgia-based insurance adjusting firm. She claims that she was called a "devil worshipper" by another employee and then eventually fired after daring to ask for a Wiccan holiday off. She's now suing.

Religious Fanatics Want to Hasten the Apocalypse
Not just Christians, but Muslim and Jews also expect the coming of a Messiah that will mark the launch of Armageddon. As bad as expecting the end of the world may be, these people expect it soon %u2014 and if it doesn't come soon enough, they are willing to work to bring it about as soon as possible.

Training Christian Fascists to Kill in the Name of God
Fascism, whatever form it takes, relies heavily on violence and the demonization of enemies. If fascism ever comes to America, it will almost certainly come under the cloak of Christianity - but isn't Christianity a peaceful religion? Not always, no. Christians can be trained to kill in the name of God, something that has been demonstrated throughout history.

School Bus Driver Fired for Being a Witch
Julie Carpenter is - or was - a bus driver in Princeton, Minnesota. She was fired when the school discovered that she was a witch and forced the bus company to get rid of her. She's suing, arguing that she's the victim of religious discrimination. The defense offered by the school district just make things worse for them.

Sanctified Violence and Religious Devotion
Many religions proclaim that they are peaceful and opposed to violence, but these same religions generally have traditions in which violence, war, and aggression are sanctified. To be "sanctified" means "to be made holy" - thus violence becomes a form of religious devotion like prayer or reading sacred scripture.

Hospital Slaps Down Wiccan Charity
I wrote a few days ago about a Wiccan coven in Ramah, Colorado, stirring up trouble because they wanted to meet to raise money for charity and local Christians couldn't stop them. Now, the hospital they want to raise money for has demanded that their name be removed from all literature for the event - they don't want charity from pagans.

Warfare and the Illusion of Power
Most people would probably assume that peace is preferable to warfare. Most people surely believe this; unfortunately, there are people who disagree. Being in a state of war is, for them, empowering because it helps them understand who they are, where they are going, and why they exist.

Druid Couple Reaches Agreement Over Illegal Stop
Remember the South Carolina police officer who tried the proselytize the Druid couple he stopped for a traffic citation? The city has agreed to apologize, but they insist that nothing wrong was done.

Violence as a Means for Achieving Justice
It's often said that violence doesn't achieve anything, but if that's true why do so many people use violence in order to achieve things? To be more specific, it appears that even when violence is being employed senselessly, more often than not the men employing it are doing so because they think it is as justified means for achieving some specific goal: justice.

Christianity, Violence, and Holy Wars
Christians often preach a religion of peace; the history of Christianity, though, is marked by rivers of blood shed in the name of righteous, religious causes. There is something incongruous about the use of the Christian cross as a symbol for war, but that's exactly what it's been.

Jewish Terrorism in Israel
When one thinks about terrorism in Israel, one normally thinks about Palestinian attacks against Jewish targets - usually civilian. Because of the Gaza pullout, though, there has been an increase in terrorist acts committed by Jews against both Palestinians and Jews. We could be looking at the beginning of a new era of terrorism in Israel.

Education and Terrorism
It is sometimes thought that Islamic terrorism is fueled by the poverty, lack of education, and lack of opportunities that afflict so many Muslims in the Arab world. Wealthier Muslim nations don't have the same problems, after all, but the truth is that most terrorists are well-educated men with good prospects for their futures.

Terrorism as Symbol and Performance Violence
The purpose of terrorism is to terrorize, right? Terrorism is designed to frighten people into submitting to some group's desires which have not been achieved through the normal political process, right? Those are the most common assumptions about terrorism, but they are relatively superficial assumptions that miss a great deal.

Religious vs. Secular Terrorism
Terrorism comes in a variety of forms, but these days religious terrorism is the most common and leads to the most destruction. Not all terrorism is equal - there are significant and serious differences between religious and secular terrorism.

Australia Legalizes Witchcraft
It's been decades since anyone has actually been prosecuted for witchcraft, but the laws have remained on the books and could theoretically be used. Now, however, that option has been eliminated - things like witchcraft and fortune telling are legal in Australia.

Utah: Teacher Fired for Being a Witch
Erin Jensen is suing the Sevier School District in Utah because their firing of her appears to have been motivated by the belief (false, as it turns out) that she was a witch. Nasty rumors were flying around town for no other reason than that she was different from most people. So, she and another non-Mormon teacher were replaced by Mormons.

Christian Adoption Agency Rejects Catholic Couples
A Christian adoption agency based in Michigan receives money from the state of Mississippi, but it doesn't treat all citizens of Mississippi equally. They refuse to place children with Catholics because Catholicism is inconsistent with the group's "statement of faith."

Christian Right Burns Church?
In Virginia, a United Church of Christ structure was set on fire. Why? Graffiti found in the church indicates that it was because of the recent UCC vote to support gay marriages. It would appear, then, that religious bigots in the South are starting to use violence against other Christians who adopt more liberal stances on homosexuality.

UK: Child Abuse Exorcism Being Investigated
A recent case of child abuse during an exorcism has led British authorities to launch a broader investigation of the practices of evangelical African churches all over the UK. There is a concern that their exorcisms may be causing more child abuse than is currently recognized.

Indiana: Judge Forbids Parents Teaching Son Wicca
Cale J. Bradford, chief judge of the Marion Superior Court in Indianapolis, has forbidden a divorced mother and father from exposing their son to "non-mainstream religious beliefs and rituals" - which essentially means their Wiccan beliefs. Why? Apparently because the judge doesn't approve.

IRA: Still Violent Thugs
Not long ago, I wrote about how the IRA were little more than thugs despite the "glorious cause" they had fought for over so many years. Unfortunately, it appears that they are determined to remain thugs rather than adopting any sort of moral high ground.

Evangelical Christians Beating Gays in the Name of God
In 2004 three men in Seattle vicious beat Micah Painter, a gay man. Why? Because their evangelical Christian background taught them that gays are evil and must be fought - an idea that they took to its logical extreme.

What Would Jesus Do? Not Work With Catholics!
Christians like to pretend that they pattern their actions after what they think Jesus Would Do. I say "pretend" because it happens so often that they act so horribly - like a Charlotte, North Carolina church that withdrew from a food pantry serving the needy because the pantry works with Roman Catholics.

Terrorism, Religious Terrorism, and Thuggery
Terrorists use violence to achieve their political goals - those goals are supposed to separate them from common criminals. Religious terrorists are supposed to employ violence in the name of some higher cause, perhaps even according to divine will. It can be argued, though, that the line between terrorism and common thuggery is not so distinct.

UK: Christians Outraged Over Pagan Ceremony
A pagan ceremony was held at the North City Centre in Harpurhey, England, and this has outraged some Christians. They don't object to the fact that a religious ceremony was performed, they object that their religious ceremonies weren't performed.

Pennsylvania: College Denies Wiccan a Job?
Judith Smell is a Wiccan who claims that she was denied a permanent job at Lehigh Carbon Community College because of her religious beliefs. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that a Wiccan was discriminated against in America, but details on this case seem to be spotty at best.

Texas: Muslim School Get Hostile Letter from 'Christian' Group
Dar-Ul-Arqam is a private Muslim school in Texas that wanted to join the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. This would allow it to compete with other private schools in athletic and academic competitions. The letter they received in response to their request was astonishing, to say the least.

Religious Discrimination at Air Force Academy?
Already trying to deal with accusations of sexual discrimination and harassment, the Air Force is now trying to deal with accusations of religious discrimination and harassment - at their own academy, no less. It seems like Christian cadets take their religion so seriously that they stop taking others' religious beliefs seriously as well.

UK: Horror Over Satanist Sailor
In Britain, the Royal Navy has decided to officially recognize the religion of a non-commissioned officer who describes himself as a Satanist. He'll have all the same religious rights and privileges as Christians, including for example being able to perform rituals in accordance with his religion. This has some Christians outraged.

Wiccans Upset Christian Neighbors
For some Christians, having neighbors of a different religion isn't easy to bear - and it's even worse when those neighbors are Wiccans. In Oregon, one community is up in arms not only because Wiccans are in their midst, but may in fact be meeting for religious reasons

Christians Fleeing Iraq
Under Saddam Hussein, Iraq was a largely secular nation. As dictator he was able to keep religious disagreements in check and prevent differences from escalating into violence. That is no longer the case and religious minorities are in a tough situation. Christians are evidently fleeing in large numbers to Jordan and Syria.

Cat Stevens: Judaism a 'so-called religion'
Cat Stevens, now known by the name Yusuf Islam, gained a lot of sympathy when he was prevented from entering the United States. Some of that sympathy might evaporate, however, when people learn just how radical some of his ideas really are - like, for example, that Israel is merely a "so-called" religion.

Indiana: Wiccans Worry Neighbors
Most Christians today continue to have negative assumptions about Wiccans, associating them with evil, Satanism, and all sorts of nasty things. This makes it difficult for Wiccans living in small, predominantly Christian communities.

Wicca Cited in Teens' Suicide
Two 13-year-old girls in Indiana committed suicide recently and, for some reason, authorities seem to be treating Wicca as a factor. For whatever reason, the Wiccan religion is regarded as an evil influence on young people in some places where authorities and parents are ignorant about nearly everything outside their own religious world.

Christians Persecuted in America?
There are quite a few conservative evangelicals and fundamentalists who are convinced that Christians are being persecuted in America. It's true that at times Christians aren't treated very well, but does this rise to the level of genuine persecution?

Religious Discrimination on the Rise?
Religious discrimination occurs, there's no doubt about it, but is it increasing or decreasing? One would hope that in America at least it would be decreasing - after all, don't Americans pride themselves on their religious liberty? Unfortunately, the liberty isn't always honored by everyone.

Wicca in U.S. Military
Wiccans are working hard to become more accepted in America. They are a religious minority that tends to have a harder time than most because Christian conservatives often identify Wiccans as witches and, therefore, as evil. Military personnel have been especially intolerant, even as military leaders have been working hard to promote tolerance.

South Carolina: Witch Persecuted by Christians
Conservative and evangelical Christians seem to like to whine about how they are persecuted in society; in reality, though, it is they who are more likely to do the persecution of religious minorities - Wiccans in particular. India: Men Held over Caste "Gang Rape"
Although caste-based discrimination is illegal in India, the government hasn't accomplished much in terms of improving relations between castes. People of higher castes still think of themselves as superior to everyone else and treat lower castes like inferior human beings. Arab Militants Raping Girls in Sudan
Rape is all too often used as a weapon of war because it destabilizes social groups and demoralizes the people being attacked. In Sudan, Amnesty International reports that the Arab militant group Janjaweed, backed by the Sudanese government, has been systematically kidnapping, raping, and murdering girls as young as 8 and women as old as 80.

Holding Religious Leaders Responsible
It's rare that people commit religiously-motivated violence all on their own. Typically, they are inspired to commit violence and whipped up into a frenzy by religious leaders whose pronouncements against infidels or evildoers are taken very seriously. What, if any, responsibility do these leaders have for the violence ultimately committed.

Most people tend to think of Buddhism as an especially peaceful and serene religion. Buddhist monks are commonly thought of as being especially peaceful and serene religious practitioners. It will come as a surprise, then, to read about Buddhist monks brawling in the Sri Lankan parliament.

Son Sues Father for Religious Discrimination
Lawsuits over religious discrimination aren't exactly common, but they aren't a rarity either. What is rare is for a son to be suing his father over alleged religious discrimination. The fact that he's breaking up with his wife might have something to do with it.

Boiling Oil Stops Bible Argument Cold
There was a time when boiling oil was regularly used to try and settle disputes - usually poured over the edge of a wall and onto the heads of angry hordes, as I understand it. Perhaps some would like to see the practice reintroduced, though modified for modern circumstances.

Indian Government to Cut Hindu Nationalist Textbooks
The previous government of India did a lot to promote HIndu nationalism and a fundamentalist form of Hinduism that was dogmatic, bigoted, and exclusionary. The new government wants to return Indian government to its pluralistic and secular roots.

God Smites Another Church
God doesn't seem to like churches. I've written more than once about how churches get hit with lighting, sometimes killing people inside. Well, another church has been hit - this time in Boston.

First non-Hindu Leads India
For the first time ever, a non-Hindu has been chosen to lead India. This is interesting because Italian-born leader Sonia Gandhi declined the position because of criticisms over the fact that she wasn’t native-born. Apparently, the Hindu-nationalists are more comfortable with a native-born non-Hindu than a foreign-born Hindu. Yes, that makes lots of sense.

Miami Mosques Vandalized
Various types of vandalism have hit three mosques in the Miami area over the past days. It's possible that this is in retaliation for the deaths of Americans in Iraq, although nothing stating that has been found.

Muslim Woman Attacked in Florida
For the most part, Muslims in America have not had to endure hate crimes on account of the terrorism committed by other Muslims in the world. It's not as if they have been completely immune to bigotry and violence, but incidents have generally been few and far between. Unfortunately, that won't be much comfort to a woman beaten in Florida because of her Islamic headscarf.

John Frum vs. Prophet Fred: War!
Religious violence has broken out in Vanuatu. No, it's not Catholics vs. Protestant or Muslims vs. Christians. In the shadow of an active volcano, the members of John Frum movement (a cargo cult) are battling the followers of Prophet Fred (a self-styled Christian messiah). It doesn't get much stranger than this.

Hindu Nationalists Defeated in India
The Bharatiya Janata Party, a Hindu-nationalist political party headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has held power in India for several years. Vajpayee was so confident of his party's popular support that he called for elections six months early in the hopes of getting an even bigger parliamentary majority. In the end, though, the more moderate Congress Party won a stunning upset.

More than 600 Muslims Dead in Nigeria Fighting
Ever since 2001, sectarian violence between Christians and Muslims has been a serious problem in Nigeria. An important factor has been efforts by Muslim majorities in the north to impose Islamic law (shariah) on everyone, even non-Muslims, which is perceived by non-Muslims as an attempt to create a fully Islamic state.

Outrage over Murdered Family
Spraying the car with automatic gunfire at point-blank range, Arab Muslims in Gaza killed a Jewish woman in her 8th month of pregnancy along with her four children. So far, the only comments I've found from Muslim leaders have been of praise for the murders - a stark contrast to how Muslim leaders have reacted to reports of abuse of Iraqi prisoners.

Religious Warfare Breaks Out in Indonesia
The Maluku islands in Indonesia are experiencing violent religious clashes similar to those which killed over 9,000 people three years ago. Muslims and Christians who were neighbors a few days ago are now shooting and throwing bombs at each other - and there is no immediate way to end the violence in sight.

More Domestic Terrorism
The American government is concerned about terrorism - but that concern seems to be almost exclusively focused upon terrorism committed by foreigners, in particular Muslims. Domestic terrorism committed by right-wing Americans has fallen almost completely off the radar. Why is that?

Christians Proselytizing with Humanitarian Aid in Somalia
It's not uncommon for Christian organizations offering humanitarian aid to also offer a bit of Christian proselytization on the side. The smart groups keep their evangelization low-key and emphasize things like feeding the hungry, but a few consider evangelization to be their primary purpose. Sometimes, this results in insults and even violence.

Killing Children for Islam?
The use of teens and children - one as young as eleven - for suicide bombings has grown in recent years, and that is raising concern in many quarters. When combined with the fact that Palestinian children are being encouraged to go into the streets to fight the Israeli army, the question is raised: do Palestinian parents not love their children?

Church of Scotland Supports Demon Possession
When people start acting out of character, should we: talk to a doctor, talk to a psychologist, or hire an exorcist? Most people today would probably consider the first or second and regard the third as a relic of the Middle Ages - but not so according to the Church of Scotland. They are going to officially recognize that demon possessions are real situations that can be helped via exorcisms.

If Your Eye Causes You to Sin...
When a man is inspired by the Bible to pull out his own eye, it's hard not to assume that he isn't insane - and it's also hard to say that there is a difference between his taking one aspect of the Bible literally and others who do the same with different verses.

Jehovah's Witnesses Speak Out on Abuse
Although most discussion about the sexual abuse of children in churches has occurred in the context of the Roman Catholic Church, there has also been abuse elsewhere. One denomination that has abuse allegations is the Jehovah's Witnesses - and they appear to be especially concerned with keeping things quiet.

Antisemitism Rising?
One of the concerns about Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion" was that it might encourage antisemitism by promoting the belief that Jews, as a group, still bear the responsibility for the death of Jesus. A poll from the Pew Research Center indicates that exactly that belief has increased since 1997, although it's not clear if Gibson's movie is related or if it is an independent development.

Bible Study Leads to Beating
Believers typically tak their Bible very seriously - so seriously, in fact, that they don't like it when others disagree with how they read the Bible. Lenny St. Laurent may have discovered that - he alleges that he was dragged from his car and beaten after a very heated Bible Study session at his church.

Child-Killer Mom Acquitted, Found Insane
A few days ago I wrote about Deanna Laney, the Texas woman accused of killing her two older sons (ages 6 and 8) and maiming her youngest in his crib. She used the insanity defense, arguing that God told her to kill and the jury accept this, acquitting her and determining that she didn't know right from wrong. I have to wonder whether this decision is acceptable from a religious perspective.

Cleric: 9-11 was a Miracle from God
President George W. Bush and his fellow Republicans like to style themselves as the most religious and most godly of Americans. They frequently make references to the idea that God is not only on the side of America, but that God actually has a strong preference for the Republican Party. But what if they are wrong?

Well, have no fear - there are many, many Muslim clerics in the world who are anxious to help educate men about how to properly beat their wives in order to ensure marital bliss.

God Told Her to Kill
The dangers of religious belief were brought into the light again recently when a woman accused of killing two of her sons stated that she was acting under the direction of God. Her attorney is pleading insanity for her - insanity that is specifically tied to her religious beliefs, arguing that those beliefs prevented her from properly understanding reality.
