Tennessee State Laws on Flag Burning, Desecration, Abuse

By , About.com Guide

Tennessee: It is a misdemeanor for someone who "intentionally desecrates" a place or worship, a place of burial, a state or national flag.

Penalty: none specified.

Source: 39-17-311

Analysis:
It's instructive that, like some other states, Tennessee lists the crime of desecrating an American flag right alongside the crime of desecrating a place of worship. This is a strong piece of evidence for the fact that the authors of such laws had in mind the idea that the flag is a religious object worthy of veneration.
