Evolution and Creationism: Recent News, Events, and Posts

Wondering about what has been going on in the world when it comes to evolution and creationism? Where are politicians trying to get Intelligent Design in public schools? How are creationists trying to deny the basis of modern science and evolution theory? Where will these anti-science efforts lead us in the long term, even as science continues to grow in importance?
Beware the Anti-Evolution Brick
You may have heard of the Brick of Silence. I don't have Brick of Silence myself, though I have thought about getting one. Well, one anti-evolution extremist tried to put the concept to use in a school where he threatened people with a brick. He didn't make any demands, it seems, but he did have a Big Brick.
Kent Hovind, Dr. Dino: Guilty, Guilty, Guilty!
I've written before about Kent Hovind, also known as "Dr. Dino" for his anti-evolution rants, being investigated by the IRS for tax fraud. He was arrested back in July and charged with 58 violations of federal law, including a refusal to pay USD $473,818 as well as making threats against investigators. Now he's been found guilty... of everything.
Montana Governor a 'Bigot' For Dismissing 4,000-Year-Old Earth
Is a person a bigot for accepting the truths provided to us by careful scientific research, dismissing the fables and myths of ancient religious superstitions? Apparently that's the case in Montana where the governor dismissed as irrelevant the idea the Earth might be 4,0000 years old. One Christian lawmaker took this very personally.
Does CBS Blame Secularism & Evolution for School Shootings?
The CBS evening news with Katie Couric has a regular feature called "Free Speech" which they have devoted almost exclusively to conservative commentators. One of the few non-conservatives invited to speak was Bill Maher and when he said he wanted to speak about religion, he was instructed not to %u2014 they wanted to give him a list of "acceptable" topics for their "Free Speech" segment.
Evolution in Action: Crickets in Hawaii Evolve Silent Wings
Creationists like to complain that evolution cannot be observed and that this is a sign that evolution isn't real science. Unfortunately for the creationists, this claim is false: evolution can be and has been observed. Significant examples of evolution in action may not occur every day but they do occur.
School Board President Denies Virtually All Modern Science
If a person is going to serve a a state-level school board, shouldn't they be at least reasonably knowledgeable when it comes to history, science, math, and other subjects which the schools teach? No one can be an expert on everything, but if they don't at least know the basics of what the students learn, how can they be in a position to decide what the students must learn?
Christians Pressuring Museum to Hide Evidence of Evolution
I've written before about how Kenya has had to hide it's irreplaceable and priceless collection of hominid fossils out of fear that Christians would come an destroy them. Right now, Christian leaders in Kenya are evidently pressuring the the National Museum of Kenya to permanently hide these fossils so that people can't see the truth and evidence of human evolution.
Americans Overwhelmingly Reject Science, Reason
he percentage of Americans who accept evolution as true is not only among the lowest in the developed world (only Turkey has a lower rate), but the numbers are declining. This is not simply because American science education is poor - although that is true - but because Americans are putting religious ideology and superstition above science and reality.
Kent Hovind Arrested
Infamously known as "Dr. Dino," an Evolution Denier and proponent of replacing modern science with the Bronze Age superstitions that make up his religion, Kent Hovind has been evading the law for years - but now the law has caught up to him. Hovind has been charged with 58 different violations of federal law, including a refusal to pay USD $473,818 as well as making threats against investigators.
Teacher Asked to Remove Flying Spaghetti Monster From Door
The Flying Spaghetti Monster has become a popular symbol of derision of the Intelligent Design movement. Since they refuse to admit that their Intelligent Designer is supposed to be their god, why not pretend that it's a Flying Spaghetting Monster? Alas, one Kansas teacher found that critics of evolution don't like being criticized themselves.
Hovind's Dino Park Facing Extinction
Kent Hovind created the Dinosaur Adventure Land in Florida to try to teach people that dinosaurs roamed the earth just a few thousand years ago, alongside humans, but in the process he tried to get around local laws. The government didn't buy creative legal arguments that it's against Hovind's religion to get building permits; now, the place has been locked up and may be torn down.
Arkansas: Geologists Not Allowed to Tell Truth to Students
Evolution is not officially banned in Arkansas schools, but it has been unofficially removed by administrators and school boards who are afraid of upsetting fundamentalists. Teachers are actually ordered to avoid telling students the truth because the truth is just too much for some religious families to bear.
Strong Support for Evolution Among American Clergy
Conservative evangelical Christians would like people to believe that evolution is incompatible with Christianity. Just about every defense made of Intelligent Design makes this claim, but is it true? In fact, most Christian denominations have expressed support for evolution and opposition to creationism. Most Christian clergy seem to support evolution.
Vatican Trashes 'Intelligent' Design
Supporters of Intelligent Design like to claim that Darwinian evolution is incompatible with their religious beliefs - by which they mean Western monotheism generally, but especially Christianity. The fact that most Christians accept evolution is ignored; it will be harder to ignore the strongly-worded condemnation of Intelligent Design that was recently issued by the Vatican.
Cline on Church/State Separation and Intelligent Design
Cline believes that the Kitzmiller case striking down the endorsement of Intelligent Design in public schools was wrongly decided. Cline believes that cases like this evince hostility towards religion. No, not Austin Cline - Andrew Cline, the editorial page editor of the New Hampshire Union Leader in Manchester, N.H.
Minister's Wife Teaching Intelligent Design 'Philosophy' Class
The El Tejon Unified School District in rural California has tapped the wife of an Assemblies of God minister to teach a new course: Philosophy of Design. It's touted as a philosophy course, but it's not a general introduction to philosophy. Instead, it's a specialized course created to present Intelligent Design alongside evolution as well as a few other ideas about design.
More Misinformation About Intelligent Design
The Christian Right is having a great deal of difficulty digesting the Kitzmiller v. Dover decision which struck down a school board's attempt to inject Intelligent Design into science classes. Judge Jones saw through all the dishonest arguments and laid bare what's really going on. The primary response now seems to be to misrepresent the decision and pretend that everything is still OK.
Jeb Bush Opposes Evolution in Schools
Governor of Florida and brother of President George W. Bush, Jeb Bush may be contemplating a presidential run at some point. Because of that, he has to be careful about what he says. I wonder what it means when he says that he accepts evolution personally, but doesn't think that it should be taught in public schools.
Is Panda's Thumb Broken?
Apparently there are political problems at The Panda's Thumb, a community site of bloggers who write about evolution and science. Some people wanted to respond strongly to the reported attack on Paul Mirecki. Others didn't and, in private, viciously attacked Mirecki for his ridicule of fundamentalist Christianity. Sounds like a great bunch.
Kitzmiller v. Dover: Intelligent Design Dumped in Dover, Pennsylvania
On December 20, 2005, Judge John E. Jones III released his decision in the case of Kitzmiller v. Dover. In this case, the Dover School Board in Pennsylvania was sued by local parents over the introduction of Intelligent Design to 9th grade science classes.
Kansas University Professor Beaten Because of Creationism Class?
Paul Mirecki, a religious studies professor at Kansas University, proposed a new class studying Intelligent Design as a religious phenomenon. After Christians complained, he had to withdraw it. Now he says he was the victim of a roadside beating by people who, according to Mirecki, referenced the withdrawn class as they pummeled him.
Intelligent Design: All About Your Relationship With God
Is Intelligent Design supposed to be about religion or science? Defenders insist that it is a scientific enterprise being suppressed by an atheistic orthodoxy in the sciences; real scientists and more than a few religious believers note that it's about religion and religious belief. Recently, some curious evidence for this has been found.
Bush and the Republicans Playing Politics with Science
One of the more disturbing aspects of the Bush administration has been the constant assault on science in the name of religious and conservative ideology. There seems to be no scientific issue on which administration is not willing to interfere in order to change undesirable conclusions in favor a pre-determined political agenda. This does appear to be part of a grand conspiracy, though.
Corporations Afraid to Support Evolution & Darwin
The American Museum of Natural History in New York is running an exhibition about the life and work of Charles Darwin. Unlike other exhibitions, though, none of the corporations they approached were willing to sponsor the exhibit because they are afraid of backlash from the anti-science, anti-modernity Christian Right. My, how we have fallen.
Santorum Flip-Flops on Intelligent Design
Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum has previously supported the teaching of Intelligent Design in public schools. He even tried to add an amendment to the No Child Left Behind law that would encourage this. Now that voters in Dover, PA, have turned out all school board members who supported teaching Intelligent Design, Santorum has quickly shifted his position.
Darwinism, Creationism, and Design in Italy
Most creationist attacks on evolution occur in the United States - the rest of the world is usually free of such nonsense. Unfortunately, the creationist bug has been slowly spreading, even to people in power who should know better.
Atheism, Intelligent Design, and Ignorance
The teaching of any form of creationism, including Intelligent Design, is typically endorsed by religious conservatives and fundamentalists. Critics commonly assume that the reason for this is their desire to promote their religious ideology, but there is also more at work: basic ignorance of science.
Kansas Favors Fables Over Science
As many expected, the Kansas Board of Eduction has chosen to downplay science in public schools because some Christians think that science is a threat to their religious ideology. Perhaps they are right, but that's a reason to rethink their religion - not undermine education for everyone else.
No Intelligent Design in Utah
The State Board of Eduction in Utah has unanimously voted to reject an effort to have schools teach Intelligent Design. Originally designated "Divine Design" by its primary supporter, Chris Buttars, it's unlikely to come back up again very soon.
Intelligent Design Explained
There is a reason why Intelligent Design supporters make their arguments in public debates, press releases, court cases, and similar venues instead of peer reviewed scientific journals: their project isn't the least bit scientific. The "reasoning" behind Intelligent Design doesn't even qualify as bad philosophy, much less bad science.
Intelligent Design, Unintelligent Arguments
"The interests of Intelligent Design advocates are served by the perception that a scientific controversy exists. But this is not a genuine scientific dispute between evolutionary biologists regarding details of legitimate controversies such as the pace of speciation or phylogenetic classification..."
Conflict in Intelligent Design Movement
Intelligent Design is not a completely unified movement. All seem to agree that the purpose of ID is to undermine naturalistic science and, ultimately, the secular society itself - the long-term goal is a Christianized society and state. Not all agree on how quickly and aggressively this should be pursued.
Alabama Turns Down Evolution Texts
The textbook committee of Alabama's state board of education has rejected proposed science texts because they reference evolutionary theory - as if any decent text on biology could avoid the issue without abandoning its credibility. These weren't even supposed to be primary science texts. They were just supplementary material.
Rebuke Godless Algebra
Religious conservatives complain about biology being 'godless' with the teaching of evolutionary theory. Why don't they complain about geology being godless, about algebra being godless, or about typing classes being godless? No gods are introduced in these lessons, so why not complain about them?
Kansas: Creationist Curricula Can't Use Copyrighted Science Standards
Because their proposed standards endorse teaching creationism, the Kansas Department of Education isn't being allowed to use copyrighted material from the National Academy of Sciences and the National Science Teachers Association in those standards. This is an expected development, but it does cause problems for the School Board.
Intelligent Design a Danger in Classrooms
If Intelligent Design is taught in schools, students will be learning an ideologically-driven religious philosophy under the guise of science. This is dangerous because it means students will not only learn falsehoods, but they will fail to learn what science really is. This, in turn, could eliminate an entire generation of productive scientists in America.
Creationists Abandoning Intelligent Design?
Intelligent Design is a new form of creationism that was developed in order to make it easier to win both legal and public relations battles. The creationist roots of Intelligent Design are undeniable, but like Peter denied Jesus it appears that some creationists are starting to deny Intelligent Design. It appears the ID is becoming too ecumenical for their taste.
Science is a Sham
The Christian Right's opposition to evolution is, at it's heart, opposition to modern science, the scientific method, and the scientific approach to life. The current target may be evolutionary theory, but their ultimate target is naturalistic science.
Creationism and School Vouchers
Florida's voucher program is pouring millions of dollars into the teaching of creationism. Some might be aghast at the idea state-sponsored pseudo-science, but that's always been one of the goals of voucher proponents: get the state to fund religious beliefs that it can't otherwise promote in public schools.
Science vs. Pseudoscience in Florida
There seems to be a bit of confusion going on in Florida. Governor Jeb Bush has gotten the Scripps Research Institute to build a campus in his state. Scripps is a major biomedical institution which has done important research on evolution - and relies on evolutionary theory for making medical discoveries. At the same time, Bush appears to be promoting creationism in schools.
Science and Scientific Hoaxes: The Importance of the Piltdown Man
Many creationists try to argue that the Piltdown Man hoax is an example of how horribly wrong science can go and why we should be more skeptical of what science tells us. In reality, though, the Piltdown Man is a very good example of what is right with science and why science is so good.
Intelligent Design: Foundation for the Whole Culture War
Too few people realize that the push for Intelligent Design by religious conservatives is part of a larger effort to undermine modern, scientific culture in favor of a regressive, theocratic state. Indeed, it appears that the philosophy of Intelligent Design is a fundamental component of the agenda: without it, the entire program falls apart.
Philosophers Have No Competency on Questions of Intelligent Design
Do philosophers of biology have anything substantive to offer on the subject of Intelligent Design and its place (if any) in modern education? One would assume so, since philosophers of biology understand what does and does not qualify as science and, therefore, where Intelligent Design might fit in. Some disagree.
Will Intelligent Design Hurt Conservatism?
Anti-science programs are playing an increasing role in American conservatism. The biggest example is the advocacy of Intelligent Design: a direct attack on a basic scientific theory because religious ideology demands it. The question is, will the anti-science attitudes of conservatives come to hurt them later?
Incompatibility of Science and Religion
"It is easy to see that science and religion are mutually exclusive rather than compatible. Indeed, science takes it for grated that the world is material and lawful rather than spiritual and miraculous. This assumption underlies the very endeavor to explore and control the world, at least in part, with the help of mundane, technological procedures rather than religious practices."
Biological Basis for Morality
Religions commonly argue that morality is and/or should be based upon their religious scriptures which reflect the will of the god(s), believed to be the original author(s) of morality. It is not thought that morality could have natural origins - but recent research on animal behavior disputes this.
Evolution or the Bible, Not Both
Steve Abrams is chairman of the Kansas State Board of Education and has been the leading figure in that state's efforts to undermine the teaching of evolution in favor of religious pseudoscience like Intelligent Design. Usually, he insists that he only seeks a "fair" hearing of all sides in the classroom, but recently he admitted his real goal.
Killer Rapist Mice and the Biological Origins of Behavior
We are all biological machines, with the origins of our behavior lying in the interactions of cells, hormones, and electrical signals. Does this mean, then, that we have no choices in how we behave? Is the biological origin of our behavior a reason to dispense with moral responsibility for what we do?
Mysteries of Human Evolution
The evolution of species on this planet is taken for granted by serious working scientists - that all species, including humans, evolved form earlier forms of life is no more open to question than whether the planet revolves around the sun. This does not mean, however, that there aren't some unanswered questions.
Skepticism of the Holocaust, Skepticism of Evolution
Religious critics of evolutionary theory emphasize the idea that 'all sides' of a debate should be taught and that schools have an obligation to present the 'debates' about academic subjects. If we apply this to evolution, though, why not also the Holocaust? This is a valid question because some teachers have tried to do exactly that.
Republican Witch-Hunts Against Climate Change Scientists?
Apparently, Republican leaders have been singling out climate-change experts for special scrutiny and intimidation if they express views on global warming which are contrary to the administration's official line. This isn't the least bit surprising because Bush has demonstrated a repeated preference for ideology over science.
Genealogy, Tribalism, and Privacy
Increasing numbers of people are paying money to have private companies test their DNA in order to tell them what 'branches' of humanity they are connected to. Is this wise? Why are they doing it and what do they hope to gain by it?
Creationism, Intelligent Design, and Arguing from Ignorance
It's amazing how many creationist arguments against evolution rely upon a principle of ignorance: because we don't know something, or can't completely and perfectly explain something, then what explanations we do have can't be very good. This principle completely dismisses what science is all about.
Don't Teach 'Both Sides' when One Side is Wrong
A common refrain from opponents of evolution is that schools should teach "both sides" of the debate - a debate which is wholly their own creation and based upon a pseudoscience of no greater intellectual value than astrology. They are trying to appeal to Americans' sense of fairness, but it makes no sense to teach "both sides" when one side is simply wrong.
Evolution, Creationism, and the Workings of Science
Most people really don't understand science all that well - they not only fail to understand what science has discovered, but also how science itself operates. Because they don't understand how science works, it's difficult for them to differentiate between genuine science and pseudoscience.
Why is Intelligent Design so Appealing?
One thing that has confounded scientists around the world is how the pseudoscience of creationism generally and Intelligent Design specifically could be so popular in America. No other aspect of science is so assiduously denied - so why this one? Unfortunately, Americans aren't responding to the "ID isn't science" argument of real scientists.
Creationists Appropriating Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs are very popular in American culture and inspire people's imaginations about life on our planet millions of years ago. This is a problem for many creationists who insist that the Earth is only a few thousand years old, though. They intend to do something about that, starting with appropriating dinosaurs for their own misuse.
Intelligent Design Supporter Jumps Ship from Discovery Institute
The Discovery Institute, a think tank funded by the Christian Right for attacks on evolution, likes to talk about how many "scientists" support their cause. Recently, one of those supporters abandoned the Discovery Institute because, in his views, they practiced both bad theology and bad science. What took him so long to notice?
Deepak Chopra's Anti-Evolution Nuttiness
Usually we only find religious conservatives attacking evolution. Attacks on evolution may sometimes be motivated by conservative religious beliefs, but in the end opposition to evolution is fueled most of all by an inability to think clearly and coherently. This is demonstrated by left-leaning anti-evolutionists, like Deepak Chopra.
McCain Sells Souls to Anti-Science
I guess it's true: you can't expect to succeed as a Republican today without publicly espousing anti-science rhetoric and support the brigades of anti-science religious conservatives. Yes, John McCain supports teaching religion alongside science in science classes.
Evolution and the Missing Link: Why Is It Missing?
Our idea that there can even be such a thing as a 'missing link' was created in an era of biological research which is long gone. It's a concept which is no longer valid in our current understanding of the nature of life and evolution - but, as is so often the case with appealing concepts, it continues to live on, to structure people's assumptions, and to influence how they think about evolution.
Science vs. Religion, Evolution vs. Creationism
Is evolution a religion and therefore should not be taught in public schools, or is creationism religious and therefore should be taught in public schools? Creationists aren't all working from the same playbook and thus we can find people advocating contradictory positions.
Equal Time for Fascism in Schools
Supporters of Intelligent Design like to say that schools should make room for every "theory" and that if evolution is true, then scientists shouldn't have a problem with teaching the "controversy." The fact that there is no controversy in science is ignored - so why not apply these principles to areas where there has been real debate?
Teaching is Not a Democratic Process
It's common for people to think that, as a matter of 'fairness,' both sides of an issue or debate should always be presented. Thus, for example, both sides of the 'evolution debate' should be presented in schools - but is that really valid? Should the content of public school classes be dictated by democratic voting?
Don't Teach Anything With Implications For Religion?
If something has implications for religion, should it be off-limits in public schools? Some people seem to think so, but that's such an absurd and ridiculous position that it simply isn't possible to mount a coherent defense of it. No, that doesn't stop some from trying...
Australian Education Minister Supports Intelligent Design
Intelligent Design doesn't merely afflict America; Australia also suffers from it. Recently, Education Minister Brendan Nelson said that he thought it sounded good if Intelligent Design were taught alongside evolution. I wonder how he got this job?
Kansas, Intelligent Design, and Pseudoscience
As many people expected, the Kansas Board of Education voted to change school science standards to attack evolutionary theory, as if it deserved to be singled out from all the rest of science. The new standards will be reviewed by an outside academic team, but even so it represents a serious loss to science and a great boost to pseudoscientific stupidity.
Vatican Rift Over Creationism & Evolution
Not every official in the Roman Catholic Church agrees with Cardinal Christoph Schönborn's recent statements about evolution. The Vatican%u2019s chief astronomer, George Coyne, has come out publicly to insist that good science shouldn't be discarded simply because some people have theological problems with it.
Challenging Evolution and Science in America
The efforts of conservative Christians to undermine any science that might challenge their religious beliefs continues to move at full speed. It's even being noticed in other nations and people abroad find the entire situation just as ridiculous as scientists in America do.
Misunderstandings About Evolution
There are a lot of misunderstandings out there about evolution. Some of this is due to the fact that people tend not to know a great deal about science. Some of this is due to the fact that the Christian Right spreads a great deal of misinformation about science generally and evolutionary theory in particular - it's critical to their religious and political agendas.
Bush Endorses Intelligent Design & Creationism
For a long time now, President George W. Bush has avoided saying anything about evolution - was that a smart move or a sign that he simply didn't understand the questions? Today, he has come out in favor of teaching "Intelligent" Design in public schools. Is this an effort to please his base or a sign of stupidity?
Government Promotion of Native American Religion
Scientists have finally been given the remains of the Kennewick Man, but the underlying debate isn't over. People still want Native American groups to get control of ancient remains on the theory that there is a cultural connection, even though that is scientifically untenable.
Speciation Mechanism Observed
How do new species develop? How does one species change to become multiple species? The possible mechanisms have studied for years, but a new factor has been found in butterflies: helping different groups to identify potential mates.
Mormon Facing Excommunication
Simon Southerton's book Losing a Lost Tribe: Native Americans, DNA and the Mormon Church, reviewed on this site, caused a lot of controversy in the Mormon Church. Himself a Mormon, Southerton is facing possible excommunication.
Utah: Teachers of Evolution 'Will Be Dealt With'
Chris Buttars, Republican state senator in Utah, really doesn't want public schools in his state to teach the truth about evolution. First he proposed that schools teach unscientific alternatives like creationism; now he insists that evolution not be taught at all. Utah education Superintendent Patti Harrington assures him that those who teach evolution "will be dealt with."
Odor, Sexuality, and Mating Practices
If human beings are related to and evolved from other mammals, then our sexual behavior and mating practices should bear strong similarities to those of other mammals. If humans were specially created, there would be no reason to find such a thing. Which do you suppose researchers consistently discover?
Ann Druyan on Changing Attitudes Towards Science in America
Americans%u2019 attitudes towards science can be very depressing. Science is becoming more and more important in our lives %u2014 and that will only continue, as we develop even greater skills when it comes to biotechnology. At the same time, though, people are turning away from the insights that science has to offer.
Most Americans Reject Evolution of Humans
A recent survey reveals that 64% of all Americans believe that human beings were created directly by God in a special act of creation rather than that they evolved from earlier creatures - whether the evolutionary process was directed by God or proceeded on its own.
Catholicism, Evolution, and Intelligent Design
For many years, Catholicism and evolutionary theory have been perceived as being compatible rather than in conflict. That may be changing in the wake of an article written by Vienna's Cardinal Christoph Schönborn. He seems more interested in defending the pseudoscience of Intelligent Design than the science of evolution.
Evolution, Morality, and Religion
Researchers have a lot of good ideas about how and why morality would have evolved - social animals cannot survive without the ability to promote cooperative, altruistic behavior and that's just what moral codes do. Where does religion come into play, though, especially given how believers insist that religion is necessary for morality?
Creationism, Science, and Mystery
One of the reasons why creationism, even in the guise of Intelligent Design, fails to qualify as science is that it is based upon (and promotes) a fundamentally unscientific attitude. Science is driven by a desire to develop knowledge and explore the unknown; creationism presumes to inform us that there is a final, absolute answer - thus removing the reason to continue investigating.
Conservatives on Evolution
The political and religious opposition to evolutionary theory (there is no scientific opposition to it) is made up exclusively of conservatives. Opposition to evolution is a basic dogma of America's Christian Right; but what to prominent political conservatives really think about the matter?
Tulsa: Zoo Scraps Creationism Display
Earlier I wrote about how the Tulsa Zoo was being pressured into creating a display promoting creationism. Good sense seems to be prevailing, though, because the display has been voted down despite the mayor's support.
Self-Organization, Complexity, and the Origin of Life
One of the most common arguments used by creationists against evolution is that it is "impossible" for complexity or novelty to come about without the direction of some outside intelligence directing the entire process. This isn't true - it's known to happen not only in biology, but also elsewhere in some very familiar circumstances
Pennsylvania: School Won't Eliminate Evolution Text
In East Whiteland, Pennsylvania, a parent in the Great Valley School District wanted her daughter excused from having to learn about evolution in biology classes and/or to have the current science text abandoned. Fortunately, the school board voted unanimously to keep the current science text.
More Scientists Ready to Oppose Creationism
The promotion of creationism has always focused on attacking evolution directly, but those who have paid close attention have realized that the arguments used against evolution also attacked science generally. Victories for creationism would have to be defeats for science generally - and, finally, more scientists outside of biology are realizing it.
Unintelligent Ph.D. Panel at Ohio State
At Ohio State University, Bryan Leonard, a graduate student in science education and well-known defender of "Intelligent" Design, wanted to defend a dissertation questioning evolution. Things were proceeding well for him until people noticed that the committee tasked with reviewing his work didn't have any experts on evolution.
Evolution of Intelligence
Human beings have evolved biologically, but to what extent have they evolved mentally? If our mental capacities are a product of natural selection, then it would be hard to argue that small sub-groups of humans that have intense intermarriage couldn't evolve different mental traits than the rest of humanity - and that includes different levels of intelligence
Virginia: Biology Teacher Trying to Teach Creationism
In Abingdon, Virginia, students have been taught creationism in their science classes - for 15 years! Only recently has anyone tried to do something about it. School officials claim that they didn't know anything about the book - over 15 years, everyone managed to remain perfectly ignorant of what was going on. Sure.
Tulsa Zoo Adding Creationism Display
Christians have managed to get the city zoo in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to agree to erect a display explaining a particular interpretation the Bible's story of the creation of the universe and life. Why? I suppose the Tulsa Park and Recreation Board doesn't have enough members with sense and education.
Evangelicals Divided over Evolution
Some evangelical Christians see evolution as the means by which God operates in nature. The most vocal evangelicals see evolution as a secular philosophy perpetuated by a conspiracy among scientists and designed to promote atheism, communism, and worse. Who is right?
Utah: Some Want to Teach 'Divine Design'
Government officials in Utah want to start teaching creationism in public schools Instead of calling it "creationism" or even "Intelligent Design," they are actually calling it "Divine Design." Didn't anyone tell them that the meager success of "Intelligent Design" depends so much on its denial of any connections to religion and gods?
Intelligent Design at the Smithsonian?
The Smithsonian Institution is supposed to be a supporter of science, but defenders of Intelligent Design duped them into supporting a creationist film being shown at the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History.
reDiscovery Institute
The Intelligent Design movement, pushed primarily by the "Discovery" Institute, is focused on getting supernatural religious beliefs included in modern science. The "reDiscovery" Institute is taking this a step further an seeks to do the same for all of science.
Purpose of Intelligent Design: Promote Confusion
Creationism isn't science and creationists have nothing to do with advancing science, human knowledge, or education. So what are they up to? The truth seems to be that they are motivated by fear to promote a religious agenda by confusing well-meaning people about the nature of science.
Creationists Trying to Redefine Science
Even in its guise of Intelligent Design, creationism is not scientific. Rather than try to conform their ideas to the standards of science, creations have been working hard to alter the definition of science so that their ideas will fit.
Removing the Anti-Evolution Stickers in Cobb County
Cobb County, Georgia, continues to fight the court order that they remove the anti-evolution stickers from their science text books. Cobb County wants to keep using them to cast doubt on evolution and promote creationism, but the courts won't let them. So, reluctantly, they have begun to remove the stickers. It's about time, too.
When Creationists are Burglarized
A common argument used by creationists is that evolution has never been directly "observed" and, therefore, doesn't count as real "science." What would be the consequences if this standard were actually adhered to in a logically consistent manner?
Netherlands: Controversy Over Evolution
Evolution and creationism have been making headlines in the Netherlands. In Amsterdam, the headmaster of a religious school had to "cool off" at home for a few days after saying that all teachers had to adhere to creationism. In the parliament, one minister tried to launch a debate about evolution but failed.
Meteorology, Evolution, and Intelligent Design
From a religious perspective, creationism is defended by reference to the Bible. From a scientific perspective, creationism is defended by arguments about how the process of evolution cannot be observed in the past and not all the details are understood. Can't the same arguments be made against the "naturalistic" science of meteorology?
Biological Basis of Empathy
Our capacity for empathy appears to be a critical component of our morality - it's because we can "feel with" others that we can understand when they are experiencing pleasure or pain and, therefore, adjust our behavior in order to avoid pain in others. Turns out, there are specialized brain cells that allow us to do this.
Bait & Switch of Intelligent Design
Advocates of "Intelligent" Design refuse to say that the "designer" of life is their god and try to leave open the possibility that they are seeking an "intelligence" which is entirely natural. In reality, such a "designer" would be inconsistent with their entire agenda.
Lou Dobbs Makes Up 'Facts' About Evolution
Lou Dobbs is a news host for CNN who focuses on monetary and economic issues. Lou Dobbs may be competent in his areas of specialization, but he doesn't know much about science - and he certainly doesn't know anything about evolution. He proved that recently on his own show and he doesn't even have the sense to be embarrassed about it.
Michael Ruse on Appeasing Extremists
One complaint creationists make about evolution is that it encourages atheism. That's false, but it is true that a number of evolutionary biologists are outspoken atheists. Should they just shut up about their atheism and their beliefs about religion?
Creationist Thugs in Turkey, Allied with American Creationists
Creationism is primarily an American phenomenon, but it isn't exclusively American. Islamic creationism has grown in popularity and it has incorporated aspects of both American creationism and Islamic extremism, resulting in a volatile mixture.
Consequences of Opposing Evolution
Does it matter if people oppose evolutionary theory? Yes: evolutionary theory is the basic organizing principle of biology which unifies the field of biology and makes it comprehensible. Denying evolution prevents one from really understanding or participating in any advances in biology - and that includes the biotechnology that will help define the 21st century.
Creationists Misusing T-Rex Find
In Montana researchers recently discovered a Tyrannosaurus rex bone that still had some apparently soft tissue inside. This could prove an incredible find for helping us understand dinosaurs. Creationists, though, are completely misrepresenting it.
Johnny Hart: Creationist
B.C. used to be a popular and funny comic strip, but in recent years cartoonist Johnny Hart has turned it into a platform for his religious bigotry. That's his right, of course, but others have the same right to criticize his bigotry. Now, he's begun to use the comic strip to attack science and evolution.
Undermining Science to Promote Faith in Children
Fundamentalists' objections to evolution are rooted much more deeply in objections to the general scientific method of approaching the universe. Not every religious person objects to trying understand reality from a scientific perspective, but many do - and not merely when it comes to evolution.
Intelligent Design is Demeaning to Religion
Support for "Intelligent Design" Creationism is exclusively religious - there are no secular, scientific reasons to defend it, so it's entirely a matter of faith. Some argue, though, that this religious ideology actually demeans traditional religion.
Evolution: Teach Concepts Before Teaching Controversy
Supporters of "Intelligent" Design Creationism often argue that public schools should teach about the "controversy" surrounding evolutionary theory. Thus, science classes will not only teach evolution but also creationist criticisms that allegedly show how evolution is faulty. This is wrong because you can't teach a "controversy" before teaching the basic concepts.
Scientific Integrity vs. Religious Faith
The Templeton Prize is given each year to a scientist who has been active in trying to merge science and religion. The Templeton Foundation exists to try to convince people that science and religion aren't really so different and that scientific research doesn't challenge religious faith.
Michigan: Teachers Sue to Teach Creationism
Gull Lake Community Schools in Michigan is refusing to allow two middle school science teachers to include "Intelligent" Design in biology lessons. The Thomas More Law Center says that it may sue, but considering the last legal case about this issue reaffirmed the right of schools to force science teachers to teach science, not religion, they're just full of hot air.
Economics of Human Evolution
Neanderthals were the dominant hominid species for 200,000 years; 10,000 years after homo sapiens arrived, Neanderthals disappeared. Why? Many different explanations have been offered but the newest may have a lot going for it: homo sapiens were better when it came to trade and that gave them a significant competitive advantage.
Assault on Evolution is Assault on Truth
The Christian Right and their Republican allies have been waging a series of organized attacks on evolution in America. They do this because they believe that science contradicts their religious faith; this also means that reality contradicts their religious beliefs.
Indiana: School Board Wants More Creationism
I really have to wonder about the background and quality of people who get elected to school boards in America. There are surely many fine individuals who serve, but sometimes they seem to outnumbered by the extreme hebetude of others - for example, the East Porter County school board in Indiana where members are concerned about new biology texts lacking information about creationism.
Scientists Boycotting Kansas Creationist Hearings
The Kansas Board of Education will be holding hearings on evolution and teaching "Intelligent" Design in science classes. Scientists, though, aren't planning on showing up because they won't dignify the process with their presence. The Board is dominated by conservatives who appear to be determined to undermine science in Kansas. Again.
Presuppositionalism vs. Causality
A common criticism of evolution is that it operates by "chance." Only the existence of God allows for an orderly universe that can be studied and understood. This criticism, though, ignores the role of causality in nature.
Teach the Controversy... or Create it?
A common refrain from "Intelligent" Design supporters is that public school science classes should teach about the controversy over evolution and critics' arguments against evolution. There is no "debate" over evolution within science - any debate or controversy which exists is purely the product of "Intelligent" Design groups. Coincidence?
Roger Ebert on Faith-Based Intolerance
You don't normally find movie critics commenting on subjects like evolution, but the recent news about how IMAX theaters refused to show movies referencing evolution in order to avoid offending religious visitors changes things.
Evolution Debate Is About Ideology
If the debate over evolutionary theory were about science, then it would play out in scientific journals, scientific conferences, and the other arenas where nature of science is discussed. The fact that scientists don't debate the fundamental status of evolutionary theory should tell us something.
Arkansas School Continues with Evolution Disclaimer Stickers
Despite an ACLU letter and unfavorable court decisions elsewhere in the nation, the Beebe School district in Arkansas will keep disclaimer stickers about evolution in science texts. Why not have disclaimer stickers about the Holocaust in history texts? Makes as much sense...
Pennsylvania: Creationism Bill Moving
Lawmakers in Pennsylvania are seriously consider a bill that would permit public schools to add "Intelligent" Design creationism to science classes. Christian Right representatives think that this will placate ignorant people who vote for them; the fact that it will lead to even more ignorant people coming out of public schools doesn't matter.
Evolution: There is No Debate. Get Over It
There has been a lot of public debate about evolution in recent years, but that public debate has masked one important fact: there is no scientific debate about the status of evolution. Scientists no more debate evolutionary theory than they do plate tectonics. Why, then, do so many Christians pretend otherwise and what should be done about them?
Blogsnark: Evolution in Ireland
Many think of opposition to evolution as being an American phenomenon. While it is true that this anti-science attitude is most prevalent in the United States, there are people in other nations who have become afflicted with the attitude that their religion requires them to deny the scientific method and scientific facts.
Science: A Dirty Word in Bush Administration
A consistent them in the administration of George W. Bush has been that of opposition to science. Any time scientific fact contradicts religious or political agendas, that science is subverted, suppressed, or outright distorted. The disdain and disregard for science is even influencing the rest of society.
You Say You Want Some Evolution...
A significant number of people in America don't believe that evolution happened and they are exercising their political muscle to get it removed from schools and even science museums. They receive considerable support from conservative politicians, but how many of the latter actually buy the anti-science beliefs of their constituents?
Undermining Science in Kansas
In the past, anti-evolution activists have only looked to undermine evolution; today, they are looking more generally to undermine science as a whole. They seek to replace naturalistic science with superstitious religion - and they are making serious headway in Kansas. A "minority report" from the state board of education is a good example of it.
Intelligent Design: Political Embarrassment to Republicans
The conflicts over "Intelligent" Design are fundamentally political in nature. Proponents make it out to be a scientific issue, but they have no science behind them. Religion plays a significant role, but mostly in terms of motivation. The goals of ID proponents aren't so much religious as political: restructuring political institutions to conform to their conservative, religious vision.
Science Theaters Rejection IMAX Films Over Evolution
The Christian Right's war on science and evolution is bearing fruit: a number of Imax theaters, even those in science museums, are refusing to run movies that even mention evolution. Why? They are afraid of a backlash from right-wing Christians disturbed at how scientific fact contradicts their religious beliefs.
White House Science Advisor: 'Intelligent' Design Is Unscientific
President Bush doesn't seem to have a very high regard for science - that's the most reasonable conclusion given the way his administration has abused and distorted science in the name of his religious agenda. That's what makes recent remarks from his White House science advisor so interesting.
Unintelligent Design
Religious believers like to claim that nature shows characteristics of having been "intelligently" designed and this then qualifies as evidence for the existence of a (divine) designer. What about all of the examples of "unintelligent" design around us?
Creationism, Evolution, and Racism
A common claim heard from creationists is that evolution is an ideology that is at the heart of modern racism. The role of Christianity in racist beliefs, including slavery, is ignored while the history of evolutionary beliefs among racists is stretched to the breaking point. It's pathetic, quite frankly.
Heckler's Veto Over Evolution
One of the religious purposes behind putting "disclaimer" stickers in biology text books is to assuage the hurt feelings of parents who don't believe evolution and don't like the fact that schools are teaching something that their religion rejects. There are good reasons to dismiss such goals as unacceptable.
Powerline: Benighted Morons?
If you aren't familiar with the Powerline site, you aren't missing anything — and should probably count yourself fortunate. Time's award for "blog of the year" didn't have anything to do with the quality of their writing, their reasoning, or their arguments. I think it might have been related to the level of their influence over the nether-regions of the internet.
ACLU, Abortion, and Evolution
It's interesting how often conservative critics link complaints about abortion and evolution. There is no inherent connection, but there seems to be in the critics' minds. This helps demonstrate, I think, that their complaints are based primarily on religious dogma rather than reason, logic, or common sense.
Arkansas: Evolution Stickers Removed from Science Texts
A school district in Arkansas tried to place disclaimer stickers in their science texts, but quick action from the ACLU has put a halt to it. The situation could have led to another lawsuit, and a certain loss for the school district, but cooler heads prevailed over religious fanaticism.
Evolutionary Link Between Social Intelligence & Cognition?
What can tamed foxes tell us about evolution, including human evolution? Perhaps a lot more than you would expect. Tests comparing tamed foxes who had no prior contact with humans against wild foxes indicate that being tamed improved their "social intelligence."
Christianity & Evolution
Christians disagree on the subjection of evolution. Some Christians vehemently oppose the science of evolutionary theory, regarding it as an attack on their religious beliefs. Others don't have a problem with evolution and think that evolution and religion are easily compatible.
Ernst Mayr & Modern Biology
Ernst Mayr was one of the most important figures in biology during the 20th century and his loss will be felt all over the world. It would not be an understatement to say that without his contributions and work, evolutionary biology today would not be recognizable.
Catholics Seeking Better Evolution Education
Usually when we hear about "religion" and "evolution" in the same news story, it involves Christians complaining about the teaching of evolution in schools - but not all Christians object to evolution. Catholic educators are now calling for more teaching of evolution in Catholic schools to counter the anti-evolution bias that kids pick up elsewhere.
Public Schools Ignoring Evolution
Evolutionary theory is the only scientific theory that explains how life has developed on Earth, but too few school students are learning about it. Teachers are afraid of a public backlash from religious extremists who object to the teaching of facts that conflict with their religious mythology; as a consequence, their kids are growing up to be as ignorant as they are.
Wedging Creationism into the Academy
Creationists are pursuing a detailed, organized program to get their religious beliefs into the academic world. Past versions of creationism didn't work, but they are hopeful that the newest - Intelligent Design - will have more success. It's sad that so many dishonest tactics have to be used in the process.
Teleology, Intelligent Design, and Children
Studies show that children are much more likely than adults to infer the existence of purpose or design in events around them. Whatever the event, children seem to instinctively reach out for an "explanation" that includes some conscious, personal force causing it according to specific intentions. Do you think this sounds familiar?
Creationism & Critical Thinking
Does a dedication to the value of "critical thinking" require one to support the introduction of "Intelligent" Design in science classes that teach evolution? Creationists would like people to think so, but they themselves evince no real dedication to critical thinking in the first place and they don't apply the principle consistently.
Michael Ruse, Evolution, and Religion
Is evolution a religion? Many on the Christian Right who oppose evolution and scientific naturalism would like to say so because if they can convince people of it, they can mount the argument that teaching it in schools violates the "separation of church and state" that they never otherwise care about. So why would a supporter of evolution help them?
Science Standards in Kansas
The Kansas State Board of Education will be holding public hearings today on new science standards. Changes proposed are, as you might expect, in line with what creationists and religious conservatives would like to see: eviscerate science in the name of protecting religious mythology.
Author of Evolution Text is a Practicing Catholic
I've written numerous times about the lawsuit in Cobb County, Georgia, over anti-evolution disclaimer stickers that were put in biology texts. A court ruled against the stickers, but the creationists are persevering. They are even attacking the author of the text - a practicing Catholic.
Complete Idiot's Guide to Intelligent Design
Ever wonder what "Intelligent" Design really teaches and is really about? You probably aren't alone - ID supporters engage in a fair amount of double-talk because they promote its religious aspects to Christians but downplay the same things when talking to the rest of the public.
Missing Link Found?
Fossilized remains of one of humanity's earliest ancestors have been identified in Africa. The Ardipithecus ramidus lived around 4.5 million years ago and could tell us something about some of the remaining gaps in the human evolutionary tree. That, or the fossils were planted by Satan to test our faith.
O'Reilly: ACLU Is The Taliban
Bill O'Reilly hosts one of the most popular programs on Fox "News," but why is that? As far as I can tell, he doesn't disseminate any actual information; instead, he just berates people for disagreeing with him and comes out at the end with an even more greatly inflated ego. Neither facts nor good sense appear to play any role in what he does.
Natural Selection in Humans?
Are humans still evolving? Scientists have long assumed so, but there hasn't been any evidence of natural selection operating on human beings - until now. Researchers have discovered a specific chromosomal inversion that confers a reproductive advantage among women in Iceland.
Showdown Over Science
There's a cultural battle in America over the nature of science. So-called "elitists" want science to be determined by facts, reason, and careful study. They dare to impose those standards across the board. Red-blooded Americans want science to be put to a vote. If a majority favors something being taught as science, then it should qualify as science.
More 'intelligent' Intelligent Design Needed
So-called "Intelligent" Design is criticized by scientists for not being genuine science, but sometimes it is also criticized by believers for not being true to religious faith. How can this be the case? Because it's nothing more than a "god of the gaps" argument that can't survive long in the real world.
Cobb County Will Appeal Evolution Sticker Ruling
As I noted a few days ago, a federal judge has declared the Georgia "disclaimer stickers" about evolution to be unconstitutional. I've seen complaints about this from religious conservatives, but none with someone actually addressing the arguments in the decision. Well, Cobb County will be appealing.
PBS Won't Air Evangelicals' Attack on Evolution
The PBS television station in Albuquerque, New Mexico, had scheduled a documentary on evolution - until they discovered that the "documentary" was created by evangelical Christians to attack evolution while promoting "Intelligent" Design. They dropped the program and that, unfortunately, has given ammunition to the Christian Right.
Penn Faculty Responds to Dover School Board
I've written multiple times about the Pennsylvania school district trying to teach about "Intelligent" Design. Science and philosophy professors at the University of Pennsylvania, my alma mater, have written an open letter condemning the move. I wonder if anyone will listen?
Decision in Cobb, County: Disclaimer Stickers Must Go
As is appropriate, U.S. District Judge Clarence Cooper ruled that the evolution disclaimers being used in Cobb County, Georgia, are an unconstitutional endorsement of religion and must be removed. Religious critics of evolution weep in anguish, but scientists are pleased that this judge saw through the creationist rhetoric.
Atheists & Intelligent Design, Redux
A little while ago I wrote about Dean Esmay, an atheist who has been trying to argue that it's legitimate for "Intelligent" Design to be taught in science classes and censorship for people to try to keep it out. Not having a leg to stand on in this matter hasn't stopped him from persisting in his arguments over the course of several posts.
Conservative Christians Defending Evolution
Is it possible to teach evolution at a conservative Christian college? Richard Colling does exactly that at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais. His work isn't exactly popular, but he defends evolution from the perspective of conservative Christianity and argues that denying the truth of evolution is simply foolish.
Blogsnark: Atheist Theory of Evolution
A common complaint from religious conservatives is the idea that evolutionary theory is an atheist plot to undermine Christianity. They don't understand that science knows no political or religious affiliations - perhaps because they just don't understand science in the first place.
Censorship of 'Intelligent' Design?
Some supporters of "Intelligent" Design have begun to argue that it is wrong to "censor" their ideas in public schools. They think, with some justification, that this change in rhetoric will win the support and sympathy. The fact that this rhetoric is at best hypocritical, and largely dishonest, doesn't seem to bother them. This should tell you something about the quality of their "science."
Unintelligent Creationism
One of the interesting features of "Intelligent" Design is the nature of the people brought out to defend it. Do you see any prominent biologists, chemists, or physicists appearing in court to argue on its behalf? No, but you do see far-right Christians appearing on far-right talk shows to do so. Does this sound like a scientific defense of a scientific theory?
Creationism vs. Imagination
One of the interesting aspects of teaching creationism or "Intelligent" Design is the way in which it would, if adopted, inhibit the principles of imagination and wonder that are so important to science. These "theories" presume to give pat answers complicated questions - if you already have the answers, what's the point of continuing to search?
Wing Nut Daily and Dragons
Many critics tend to refer to conservative internet publication "World Net Daily" as "Wing Nut Daily." I have resisted the trend, even though I almost always disagree with them, because I wanted to try to treat them with a little respect. I can't do that any longer. Why?
Darwinism Fails?
I think that the intellectual emptiness of "Intelligent" Design can, in part, be demonstrated in part by the intellectual emptiness of the arguments used by supporters. If there really were something substantive to "Intelligent" Design, there wouldn't be so many horrendous arguments being used to defend it.
Blogsnark: Atheists for Teaching Intelligent Design?
Can an atheist believe that it is appropriate to teach the religious beliefs of "Intelligent" Design in public school science classes? I wouldn't have thought so, but I would have been wrong. There is at least one who does and who objects to the lawsuit in Pennsylvania trying to stop a school from doing just this.
Wisconsin: Policy on Teaching Creationism Clarified
The Grantsburg school district in Wisconsin recently adopted new science standards that many feared would lead to teaching "Intelligent" Design and/or creationism in the schools. Mindful of this, the school board has revised the policies in order to make things clear - and exclude creationism.
Whose Creationism Shall We Teach?
Conservative evangelicals in America often complain about the teaching of evolution in public schools because they think that science contradicts their religious doctrines. They would like to see their creation stories taught as well - and as if those stories were as valid as modern science. In doing so, they ignore the creation stories of every other culture and religion.
Sexy Evolution
Apparently, male swallows are growing longer and longer tails. Why? Female swallows seem to like long tails quite a lot, to males with longer tails have a better shot at getting the mate they want. It's evolution in action, but creationists will dismiss it because the male swallows aren't a new "kind" of some sort.
Pennsylvania: 'Intelligent' Design Reflects Religious Beliefs
The Pennsylvania community that will start teaching "Intelligent" Design alongside evolution is apparently doing so because it reflects local religious values. This will surprise no one, but it's nice to see an admission that this is about religion and values, not science or facts.
Distinguishing Evolution from Intelligent Design
People in biology don't typically take "Intelligent" Design very seriously - at least, not as a science and not in their day-to-day job. When it comes to their work, evolution remains the organizational principle. What would be necessary for "Intelligent" Design to stand out as a superior and useful explanation for the diversity of life?
Disclaimer Stickers for Science Texts
The Georgia lawsuit over placing disclaimer stickers in science texts that discuss evolution continues to get attention. Finally, though, someone is putting it all into the perspective it really deserves.
Evolution vs. Fundamentalism
In the American conflict between science and religion, the most severe debates seem to revolve around the status (and teaching) of evolution. Many religious believers regard evolution as a serious threat to their beliefs, values, and even their very religion.
Barely Half of Americans Accept Evolution
Evolutionary theory is the organizing principle for all modern biology - denial of it is like denying relativity in modern physics. The fact of evolution - the fact that allele frequencies change in populations over time - is as undeniable as are the actions of gravity or continental shifts. Despite this, only a third of Americans actually think that evolution is supported by the evidence.
War of Reviews: Intelligent Design vs. Honesty
Intelligent [sic] Design "theorists" are better known for their bumptious arguments in religious journals than for serious science. Sadly, such disdain for the enforced honesty of the scientific process seems to extend to other areas, for example in the dishonest reviews posted to online book retailers for books on evolutionary theory.
Mt. Rushmore Test?
The Argument from Design is one of the most popular arguments used by theists to make a case for their theism. Unfortunately, it's also an especially weak argument when framed improperly. Even the best versions have serious flaws, but when someone doesn't really know what they are doing they can turn an already poor argument into a truly laughable one.
Science, Atheism, Religion
The Georgia lawsuit over disclaimer stickers in science texts continues to confuse people. All around the internet you can find writers who don't understand that evolution is science, creationism is religion, and that the debate has nothing to do with atheism.
Seventh Day Adventists Affirm Literal Six-Day Creation
Apparently determined to hold the line against encroaching secularism and science, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has reaffirmed their teaching that there was "a literal, recent, six-day creation." It's not clear what consequences this opposition to modern science will have for their Loma Linda medical facility.
Creationism & Misrepresenting Evolution
A creationist sticker claiming that "evolution is a theory, not a fact" has been attracting both critics and defenders. Among defenders, it seems necessary to mislead people as to what the sticker says while ignoring it factual errors. Perhaps they don't care what is said, just so long as religion wins.
Wisconsin: School District to Teach Creationism?
Proponents of creationism have rarely found much success in getting schools to teach their religious beliefs in the guise of science, but they have scored one victory in Wisconsin. There, a school district's science curriculum guidelines call for teaching other "models/theories" besides evolution. No word on whether astrology and the geocentric model of the solar system are to be included.
Evolution of the Human Eye: Problem Solved?
A common argument offered by creationists is that biological structures like the eye could not possibly have developed via natural selection. Therefore, they conclude, such structures must have been created specially. To counter this biologists have offered ways in which eyes could have evolved naturally - and now some may have discovered evidence to back it up.
Georgia: Trial Over Anti-Evolution Stickers
In Cobb County, Georgia, science textbooks come with a disclaimer that evolution is just a theory, not a fact. This contradicts genuine science and is used merely to placate religious conservatives who find modern science threatening to their religious beliefs. Now, the issue will go to trial in federal court.
More on Creationism at the Grand Canyon
Criticisms of the Bush administration's decision to keep selling creationist literature at the Grand Canyon, thus giving the impression that creationism is approved of by the National Park Service, continue to attract some moderate attention. It's another sign of how Bush favors ideology over science or facts, but the mainstream media aren't making the necessary connections.
UnIntelligent Design & AIDS
Phillip Johnson is well-known for his unscientific views on biology and evolution (he's a lawyer with no scientific training), but now his pseudoscientific thinking is causing him to weigh in on AIDS - and in a manner that is even more dangerous than is the case with evolution.
Delaware: Dover Schools to Teach Intelligent Design
It has been tried many times in many different places, but for the first time ever a school board has actually decided to introduce "Intelligent" [sic] Design into the curriculum of a public school. Pity the poor students of Dover, Delaware, who may be subject to this religion-based ignorance and pseudoscience.
Creationist Book Stays At Grand Canyon
Late last year the Bush administration decided to start selling a creationist book at the Grand Canyon park bookstore. This caused an outcry among scientists, especially when the administration also prevented the park staff from creating a rebuttal to the book. Now the administration may have decided that the book will and must remain on sale.
Britain: Creationist School Blocked
Sir Peter Vardy is a millionaire businessman in Britain who has been financing a series of schools that, apparently, have been teaching creationism as if it were valid and reasonable. One community that doesn't want such nonsense in their midst have managed to block his most recent venture.
Daniel Dennett Recants Atheism?
Some may have read the claims from Robert Wright that Daniel Dennett, evolutionist and atheist, has essentially renounced both and embraced a theism-centered form of Intelligent Design. True? No - Wright is misrepresenting and distorting Dennett's words in a manner common to creationists.
Crusade Against Evolution
The so-called "Intelligent [sic] Design" movement is doing very well in one of its primary goals: convince people that there is a "debate" in science over the status of evolution and, therefore, it would be more responsible to "teach the debate" rather than just teach evolution alone. It's a lie that appeals both to the ignorant and to those seeking cover for their religious prejudices.
Necessity of Christianity?
Proponents of so-called "Intelligent [sic] Design" like to claim that their purpose is to reveal the scientific flaws in Darwinian evolution that is accepted by nearly all real scientists. The truth is that they are seeking to insert their own religious beliefs into science - it's a religious agenda, not a scientific one, that drives them.
Serbian Education Minister Quits
I wrote before about attempts by the Education Minister of Serbia to get rid of evolution from public school classes unless accompanied by creation and the subsequent rush by the government to reverse this (after it was clear just how badly received it was by the world press). Now the minister has quit. Is anyone surprised?
Serbia Evolves After All
Yesterday I noted how Serbia was eliminating evolution from school lessons. Well, the negative attention seems to have had an impact and evolution is being restored. The minister responsible is "unavailable" for comment right now.
Evolution Illegal in Serbia
Evolution is ending in Serbia - and I mean that in more ways than one. Ljiljana Colic, Education Minister of Serbia, has ordered a halt to teaching eduction in all schools unless accompanied by an equal portion of creationism. Students won't learn about evolutionary science and Serbia itself will stagnate scientifically.
Marriage: One Man + One Woman? DNA Says No!
Scientists have traced our mitochondrial DNA back to a single ancestor 160,000 years ago - Mitochondrial Eve, the most recent woman we are all descended from. Studies of men's Y chromosome trace the most recent man we are all descended from - 60,000 years ago. Why the difference?
Should Biology Texts Have a Disclaimer About Evolution?
Some argue that evolution is just a theory, not a fact, and therefore biology texts that present evolution as if it were a fact mislead students. They want disclaimers added to the books stating that evolution is only a theory. Does this sound justified?
Humans Evolved to Enjoy Alcohol?
Creation and use of alcohol can be traced back to some of our earliest civilizations. Fermentation occurs naturally and attracts the interest of many different animals. Could it be that we humans evolved in way that makes attraction to alcohol natural to us?
Intelligent Design: Creation Science 2.0?
Is Intelligent Design really the same as Creation Science? Although adherents of ID disclaim any connection to the scientific creationism of the past, the similarities are striking and deserve to be explored.
Christian Academy: Creationism is Rubbish
A Christian school where God and religion play major roles in everything taught... and no creationism? Not only is creationism not taught, but the school administration thinks that creationism is rubbish? Well, the school is in Britain instead of the United States - that makes all the difference, doesn't it?
Kansas: Conservative Creationists Spending Big
Creationists are trying to make a come-back in Kansas with conservatives paying out lots of money to ensure that moderate Republicans aren't elected to the State Board of Education. Go Ignorance!
Resentment Against Competence
It's rather common in America for people to be prejudiced in favor of the "common man" and against "experts" who claim to know better. When it comes to democratic decisions, that's fair - but not everything is a democratic decision. Many things, such as science, are not democratic in the least. In many fields, the experts are right and others are just plain wrong.
Battle For Kennewick Man Over?
A collection of 380 bones and bone fragments discovered on July 31, 1996, in Kennewick, Washington has been focus of an intense legal battle for nearly a decade. Scientists want to study the bones to learn more about what early Americans were like, but Native tribes claim the bones as an ancestor and insist on a proper burial without any tests being done.
Intelligent Design, Rev. Moon, and Deception
It is a characteristic of Intelligent Design that proponents will say one thing in one place but something radically different elsewhere - all in an apparent attempt to mislead people into thinking that Intelligent Design is a genuine scientific endeavor.
Montana School Board Rejects Creationism
The Darby School Board in Montana has been considering the inclusion of creationism alongside evolution in biology classes, but in the most recent vote that proposal was defeated.
What is Evolution?
Critics of evolution are often very inaccurate (and, apparently, sometimes even dishonest) in how they frame the discussion about evolution and creationism. One of the favorite tactics seems to be the mis-definition of evolution itself. If they can define it any way they choose, it's easier for them to attack it.
Tony Blair Backing Creationist Schools?
In America creationist beliefs are relatively (and sadly) common, but in other western nations they are relatively rare. That explain why there is so much surprise and criticism over the fact that British Prime Minister Tony Blair has close ties to and is supportive of someone who wants to run a chain of schools that teach literal, biblical creationism.
Evolution as Religious Fundamentalism?
A couple of common tactics of the Christian Right when attacking evolution are to portray it as a 'religion'? (thus teaching it violates the separation of church and state, something they never worry about otherwise) and to portray evolutionary scientists as 'unfair'? or 'dogmatic'? for not giving creationism equal time. Sometimes, both attacks are combined into one.
New Intelligent Design Scam
Creationists want desperately to have some version of their religious beliefs taught in public schools. First raw religious creationism failed. Then so-called 'scientific'? creationism failed. Recent so-called 'Intelligent'? Design has been failing. Creationists are turning to a new scam: argue for teaching the 'debate'? over creationism, not creationism itself.
New Speciation Observed
One of the favorite arguments of creationists is that the development of new species has never been observed; therefore, the idea that new species could be produced by evolution is an unsupported (and unsupportable) article of faith. Unfortunately for creationists, speciation has been observed - and a new case of speciation has recently been observed.
The Big Lab Experiment
A basic feature of many religious conceptions of the universe is that displays features consistent with something that was created with a purpose. This, they say, is evidence that their God exists. The premise, however, does not necessarily entail the conclusion. What if a non-god created our universe? It's not as far-fetched as one might think.
NPR Refuses to Support Intelligent Design
On the May 21 edition of National Public Radio's "Science Friday" program, creationist school teacher Roger DeHart was supposed to appear but was uninvited at the last minute. According to the Discovery Institute, a group which promotes creationism (labeled 'Intelligent Design'?), this amounted to censorship.
Fooled by Stephen J. Gould?
There are a lot of people who are so blinded by their fundamentalist religious faith that it prevents them from developing coherent ideas about evolution and atheism. This is especially unfortunate when misguided publications allow such people to spread their misunderstandings even further.
Argument from Irreducible Grotesqueness
The basic argument of the so-called "Intelligent Design" movement is that some biological systems are too complex in order to have evolved naturally. Instead, they must have been "designed" with their current situation in mind by some "designer." One type of complex system we don't hear too much about are the systems involving disease and parasites. I wonder why?
False Objectivity in Science Reporting
When reporters are being "fair" on political issues, they give both sides a say. But should the same apply to science reporting? Often reporters give time to the "side" that is supported by large amounts of money from industries that stand to lose if the "side" that is supported almost 100% by science is generally believed. That isn't scientific and it does a disservice to the public.
The Purpose of Life is a Beach
A common argument offered by so-called "Intelligent" Design supporters (as well as other sundry creationists) is that the appearance of something that is well-suited to some situation or set of conditions should be regarded as evidence of "design" in nature. The problem with such an argument can be best understood when we consider the silly ways in which it can be used.
Italian Schools Pulling Evolution?
Following the lead of America, it appears that Italy will be pulling evolution out of public secondary schools. I'm not really sure why this is happening - the Catholic Church doesn't oppose evolution and Italy isn't exactly a hotbed of Protestant creationism.
Dembski and Quotations
One the hallmarks of creationism - and a sign of the dishonesty of creationists - is how they misquote others in creationist writings. Not content to misrepresent science itself, they also insist on misrepresenting real scientists in order to make it appear as though those scientists support creationism and oppose evolution. Apparently, Intelligent Design isn't far different.
Human Intelligence vs. Divine Intelligence
The basic premise of the "Intelligent Design" movement is that the complexity we see in the world is a sign of intelligence. We see the same in our own creations, therefore we shouldn't deny the same evidence in divine creation. But is this connection really valid? No - all we have is evidence of human intelligence leading to human creations.
Montana Republicans Support Teaching Creationism
There are two Republicans who would like to become governor of Montana, Tom Keating and Ken Miller. Both favor the teaching of creationism in public schools. Of the four other candidates from other political parties, none favor teaching creationism. This is no different from being in favor of teaching astrology or a flat earth in schools
IRS Investigating Hovind
Kent Hovind, also known as "Dr. Dino," is an important figure in the creationist movement. He even runs a creationist theme park that offers information on "Dinosaurs in the Bible," and rides like swings and trampolines that test "your faith in God's laws." Now, though, the IRS has raided his homes and businesses...
Weekly Quote: Sagan on Science
"There are no forbidden questions in science, no matters too sensitive or delicate to be probed, no sacred truths." - Carl Sagan
NCSE Promoting Religion?
The National Review Online seems bound and determined to make a name for themselves as shills for creationism and unscientific opponents of evolution. Earlier, they attacked Brian Leiter for his comments about a law student's ignorant defense of Intelligent Design. Now they are attacking the National Center for Science Education and alleging that they are using religion to promote evolution.
Crackpot Index
With all the new scientific and allegedly scientific ideas that come out, how is a lay person to distinguish between the things which are genuine science and the things which are, well, more suited to the fiction section of the bookstore?
Book with Information on Evolution Will Remain
In Helena, Montana, Roxanne Cleasby wanted to get the book "Horses" by Juliet Clutton-Brock pulled from the Smith Elementary School library because it contains a couple of pages dealing with equine evolution. Fortunately, the school board has refused the request for a review.
Methodological and Philosophical Naturalism
An important goal of the Intelligent Design movement is to get people to think that “methodological naturalism (MN) entails philosophical naturalism (PN)." In other words, they want people to believe that the naturalistic methodology that is standard in modern science is compatible only with atheism, not with theism.
Intelligent Design? Not Even Imaginative Design
A recent story in World magazine had four leader of the so-called "Intelligent Design" movement imagine that they were living in the year 2025 and were asked to write an "obituary" for evolutionary theory, explaining how and why it went wrong but how and why Intelligent Design won out. The results are... less than stellar.
Science and Education
Science is important in modern society, obviously, but why then don't children learn enough about it in school? What, in fact, should children be learning about science in the first place?
Christian Reconstructionists Back Creationism, Intelligent Design
Creationist groups are very vocal and are able to have a lot of influence - but how and why? More specifically, where are they getting the money to fund their programs, books, etc.? Evidently, they get some serious backing from Christian Reconstructionism, the movement that seeks to reform American law so that it mirrors Old Testament biblical law, creating a repressive theocracy in America.
No Free Lunch?
One of the most recent attempts to undermine evolution and defend "Intelligent Design" is the idea of "No Free Lunch." This is the idea that there is no single algorithm which is always efficient in every circumstance. Thus, argues Dembski in a recent book, the algorithm "evolution" can't be any better than the algorithm "blind chance."
Genetic Mutation Led Indirectly to Larger Brains?
Why do humans have so much bigger brains than other primates? That's a question which has consumed many researchers - but now they may have found an answer, and in an odd place. According to recent information, a genetic mutation that decreased the size and strength of the jaw may have allowed our ancestors' brains to increase dramatically.
Dembski's Religious Motivation
Is so-called "Intelligent Design" a religious or a scientific movement? It tries to exist in the realm of science, but that doesn't make it scientific and it certainly doesn't mean that it isn't religious. The key, one might argue, is what motivates "Intelligent Design" researchers: science or religion?
Science on Verge of Creating Life
A common objection to evolution is that scientists have proven unable to create life from scratch - therefore, they don't understand enough about it in order to say that it could have developed naturally. Creationists seem to believe that their god can somehow be preserved so long as scientists cannot create life - but if that is the case, then their god may not exist much longer.
The Immanent Demise of Evolution
Is evolution about to go the way of the Dodo bird, overtaken by the more fit alliance of Young Earth Creationism and Intelligent Design? It would be ironic, if true - but there is little reason to believe it. What's interesting is the fact that defenders of one form or another of creationism have been predicting the immanent downfall of evolution almost since the beginning.
Earlier News on Evolution and Creationism
Wondering about what has been going on in the world when it comes to evolution and creationism? There are regular new stories about the efforts of creationists to insert creationism or 'Intelligent Design' into public schools that teach evolution. How are they doing this and how does it affect others?
Blogsnark: Truth Decay - Creationists Blind to the Truth
There has, naturally, been a lot of negative reactions from religious conservatives to the Dover trial ruling which struck down the introduction of Intelligent Design creationism in school science classes. Unfortunately, little of that reaction appears to be based upon a sincere and careful reading of the decision itself.
