Comparing White & Christian Nationalism

What are the Similarities Between White Nationalism & Christian Nationalism?

By , About.com Guide

There are a lot of potential parallels between the ideologies of Christian Nationalism and White Nationalism. Even raising the possibility is certain to upset apologists for Christian Nationalism because they generally agree that White Nationalism is evil. This doesn't invalidate those parallels; on the contrary it makes pointing them out all the more important because they reveals problems in Christian Nationalism which Christian Nationalists either don't see(and need to think about) or don't want others to see. What we all need to understand is just how wrong and dangerous Christian Nationalism ultimately is.

1. Loss of Privilege

Resentment over a loss of unjust privileges underlies most if not all reactionary movements that fight against the equality of traditional minorities. White Nationalism is clearly driven by resentment — whites once had privileged access to the halls of power, respected occupations, and more, all of which minorities can now enter. Christian Nationalism is driven by similar resentment against a loss of privileges over non-Christians. Christians seek a restoration of Christian privileges, which necessarily entails a second-class status for non-Christians just as a restoration of white privileges would mean a second-class status for non-whites.

2. Loss of Cultural Power

With a loss of privilege comes a loss of cultural power. This means losing the power to determine the direction or substance of culture. White Nationalists frequently complain about the influence racial minorities have in music, clothing, language, and other aspects of contemporary culture. They promote instead "white" culture which they claim is better and would like to see "non-white culture" suppressed. Christian Nationalists similarly regret the loss of Christian influence on music, films, TV, and so forth. Much of the agenda of Christian Nationalism involves reasserting Christian power over popular culture and eliminating the influence of immoral non-Christians.

3. Loss of Political Power

A loss of political power is major concern to White Nationalists who are infuriated that non-whites hold political power over whites and that the interests of non-whites are given equal consideration to those of whites. Restricting political power to whites is a principle goal of White Nationalists who want to shut non-whites out of political office. Similarly, Christian Nationalists worry about how non-Christians can hold public office, are treated as equal before the law, and generally aren't treated as political inferiors. Both White and Christian Nationalists "want their country back," which means wanting a country where they are in power and others must submit to white or Christian authority.

4. Resentment Towards Minorities

You can't resent a loss of privileges and power without also resenting the minorities who now share those privileges and power. For White Nationalists this resentment is also outright hatred, though many couch their hatred in careful terms about only wanting to assert pride in being white in a society where whites are "discriminated" against (i.e., aren't privileged). For Christian Nationalists the resentment is rarely expressed as open hatred, though they too can insist that they only want to make it safe for Christians to be self-confident in a society that is hostile towards them and discriminates against (i.e., doesn't privilege them).

5. Attitudes of Territoriality & Ownership

Where there is resentment over a loss of cultural and political power one finds people expressing the attitude that they somehow "own" important cultural, social, or political institutions and thus the minorities sharing them now are merely trespassers. Both White Nationalists and Christian Nationalists can be seen making claims about how America was founded by them and based on their unique, special values. Racial and religious minorities are attacked for daring to exert any power in society because they lack the values necessary to exercise power correctly. They aren't "real" Americans, can't be trusted, and will only undermine the institutions created by smarter, better whites and Christians.

6. Chosen People

People trying to justify why they "deserve" special privileges sometimes claim that they are somehow "chosen," in particular that they are "chosen" by some deity for a special destiny. White Nationalists frequently claim that God has chosen them as bearers of Christianity and civilization. Christian Nationalists frequently claim that God has chosen America for a special purpose and that America needs to uphold Christianity to fulfill God's purpose. One consequence of asserting a "chosen people" status is of course the relegation of all other groups to second-class status. They aren't necessary for "the plan" and may in fact be stumbling blocks which need to be eliminated. If you aren't chosen, you're nothing.

7. Xenophobia & Exclusion

The purity of the chosen people can only be preserved by keeping high the boundaries of exclusion. White Nationalists object to mingling with any other races and aren't willing to consider accepting any outsiders as new insiders. Christian Nationalists won't consider any non-Christian religions as have the same status as their own Christianity — even the label "Judeo-Christian" is little more than an attempt to evade accusations of anti-Semitism. These harsh attitudes towards outsiders do not translate into anything like respect or a willingness to work together on common causes, which makes these attitudes antithetical to living in a diverse, free democracy.

8. Demands for Purity

Both White Nationalism and Christian Nationalism are obsessed with a desire for purity, an attitude which goes further than mere xenophobia. When the in-group is invested with everything that is good and safe while outsiders are tarred with everything that is evil and dangerous, it may be unavoidable that one obsesses over avoiding any contamination from the outside. It's the only way to maintain an insider status. Purity as an absolute value is clear among White Nationalists who condemn race mixing or cultural borrowings from non-whites. Purity is also demanded by Christian Nationalists who insist not just on religious purity, but also sexual, gender, and political purity across the board.

9. Authoritarian Politics

Privilege, power, and purity for any one group are difficult to maintain in a free society. Too much freedom means too many avenues for challenge, criticism, and perhaps the growth of equality. It's inevitable then that White Nationalists and Christian Nationalists become heavily invested in authoritarian politics. White Nationalist need authoritarian politics to enforce white purity and racial segregation. Christian Nationalists need authoritarian politics to enforce theocratic policies, suppress criticism of Christianity, and maintain the dominance of Christian institutions.

10. Conspiracy Theories

Both White Nationalists and Christian Nationalists deny that they seek anything unjust, but can't deny that their ideology hasn't been officially adopted. This problem tends to be explained by conspiracy theories. Some cabal of Jews, atheists, gays, humanists, or whoever is the favorite target for the day must be conspiring to unjustly prevent whites and Christians from assuming their natural place: in charge of everyone else. These conspirators are the "real" bad guys and in some stories are actually serving the will of Satan. In the end, though, the godly whites or Christians will be triumphant.

11. Violent Rhetoric

When some group is resentful over a loss of privilege and power, it's rare that their rhetoric is peaceful or temperate. White Nationalists frequently refer to a future "race war" when whites will have to use violence to eliminate minorities trying to live as equals. Christian Nationalists also frequently refer to future conflict — specifically, an apocalypse when they can join the armies of God to destroy all the evil doers in society: atheists, secularists, gays, humanists, Muslims, liberals, etc. Both White Nationalists and Christian Nationalists express hope and desire for a future when they can massacre people they disagree with and be lauded as heroes for that.
