Worship of Tepoztecatl occurred primarily during autumn festivals with the consumption of large quantities of pulque, an alcoholic drink made from the agave plant. A major shrine to Tepoztecatl was located at Tepoztlan and was called Tepozteco. It was begun in 1250 CE by the Tlalhuica as a 2-tiered pyramid; after the Aztec conquered the region in the 15th century it was expanded to a 3-tiered pyramid with a 2-chambered temple.
Mythology and Legends of Tepoztecatl:
According to Tlalhuica legends, Tepoztecatl saved them from an annual sacrificial tribute to the city of Xochicalco. The Tlalhuica had to offer up an old man every year to be eaten by a dragon, but one year Tepoztecatl disguised himself as an old man, was sent to be sacrificed, but killed the dragon himself instead.
