It might be expected that conservative Christians would hold at least some animus towards atheists, and in fact hostility towards atheism is almost universal among 'born-again Christians.' Even non-Christians and liberal Christians, however, demonstrate a great deal of anti-atheist animus. Tirades against 'godless liberalism' on the part of the Christian Right may be causing some liberals to tell atheists to simply go away or at least stop agitating on behalf of secularism and science. Who is Prejudiced Against Atheists? Why is there Bigotry, Prejudice Against Atheists? Origin of Anti-Atheist Animus:
Bigotry and prejudice against atheists is widespread in the United States. A wide variety of reasons are cited for these anti-atheist attitudes in America, but the one thing they almost all have in common is the fact that they are false: people justify their animus towards atheists by saying things about atheists that simply aren't true. Atheists are thus hated based on what people imagine about them, not based on anything about atheism itself. This makes atheists the new American scapegoats. Why is there Bigotry, Prejudice Against Atheists? How Are Atheists Discriminated Against?:
Bigotry against atheists is not limited to theory and harsh language anti-atheist bigotry can also lead to anti-atheist discrimination. After all, if bigots are convinced that atheists are immoral, untrustworthy, and perhaps even evil on some level, then its only to be expected that they will treat atheists unequally and as inferiors. Unfortunately, the reasons behind anti-atheist discrimination are no better than discrimination against Jews and racial minorities in the past. How Atheists Are Discriminated Against?Atheists Aren't so Hated Because They Don't Experience Hate Crimes:
We probably can't know for sure how many hate crimes atheists might experience because of the consequences which people might suffer from admitting their atheism atheists are in the same position as gays not too long ago. That said, however, it is likely that atheists don't experience as many hate crimes as Jews, blacks, and other minorities. Doesn't this mean that atheists aren't as disliked? No, because it misrepresents what is being stated in saying that atheists are the most hated. Atheists Aren't so Hated?
