If Atheism is a Religion... Then Bald is a Hair Color

How Many Different Ways Can You Complete That Retort?

By , About.com Guide

Most atheists have probably encountered religious theists trying to convince them of the falsehood that atheism is a religion (some of these same people are Christians who insist that Christianity isn't a religion!). A popular retort is that "If atheism is a religion, then bald is a hair color," thus revealing that you can't define the absence of something as simultaneously the presence of that thing. How many other ways can you express the absurdity of calling atheism a religion?

Although saying "If atheism is a religion, then bald is a hair color" is a good response, using it too much will probably lessen its effectiveness. If believers hear it too often, they'll simply stop thinking about it and therefore won't have to confront the absurdity of what they are saying. The more creative alternatives we have, though, the more opportunities we will have for getting believers to stop and really think about what they are trying to argue. So, what sorts of suggestions can you come up with?
