Atheism, Agnosticism, and Freethought: News and Events

Curious about what has been going on with the atheism and atheists both in America and around the world? What are atheists themselves saying about atheism, religion, and politics? Atheism doesn't come up very often in the media, but that doesn't mean that there isn't anything to say or to report about. There are very regular stories involving atheists and atheism if you look closely.
Atheism Debate: Jeff Lowder & Phil Fernandes
What do you think about public, oral debates over issues like the existence of god or whether evolution is valid? I'm not convinced that they have much value because they seem to me to turn more on who is the better debater than on who has the best position. A skilled debater and public speaker with a poor position will win against a poor debater with a better position.
A Closeted Atheist in a Conservative Christian College
It's sadly common for atheists to have hide their atheism from people around them - friends, neighbors, coworkers, and even family. For some, though, staying in the closet can be more difficult than others. A person who works in or is somehow a part of a religious institution, for example, can be placed in difficult situations far more often than most people.
Secular Americans More Moral than Christian Americans
As I reported several months ago, American Christians are far more likely to support torture than "secular" Americans. I%u2019m not sure what %u201Csecular%u201D means, but it surely includes atheists and agnostics, given how the term tends to be used in surveys.
Atheists in Foxholes Fighting for Respect
One of the most important things to remember about the tired old canard of there not being any "atheists in foxholes" is how this expresses fundamental disrespect for atheists. Either it says that atheists have weak convictions that change as soon as danger rears its head or it says that atheists only adopt atheism so long as it appears to be safe to do so.
Atheist Invited to New Orleans Prayer Service
On the first anniversary of the destruction of New Orleans by hurricane Katrina, the city will host a commemorative service which includes an ecumenical prayer gathering. This bothered Harry Greenberger, leader of the New Orleans Secular Humanist Association, but rather than demand that it be stopped he simply asked to be included. What happened next was very instructive.
Lightning Strikes Agnostic
I've written many times before about lightning striking religious believers, often while they are engaged in religious exercises or attending religious services in churches. Just how often does lightning strike non-believers, though? What about agnostics? Gays sometimes have to endure it, but you don't hear much about non-believers being hit or converted by lightning.
Newt Gingrich Endorses Atheist Takeover of World?
Some atheists argue that if religion could be eliminated, then the world would be a more peaceful place because most conflict is tied to religious disputes. This is unlikely, but there is some validity to the idea that less religion might entail less violence. Believers usually reject this idea out of hand, but at least one conservative leader may have unwittingly revealed different feelings.
Atheists Living in the Shadow of the Cross: Mt. Soledad, San Diego
The lawsuit against San Diego's Mt. Soledad cross was originally filed by an atheist and veteran. Responses to the lawsuit are almost always negative comments from religious theists - but what do other atheists in the San Diego area think? We don't hear as much from them, but their perspective matters as well.
Atheist Acquitted on Charges After Being Harassed by Christians
Is America the sort of country where Christians can harass an atheist girl in school, assault her father, then blame the father for the assault and file criminal charges against him? Is America the sort of country where the father can be told to leave the state if he wants the charges dropped? Yes, America is that sort of country because American Christians can be exactly that sort of person.
From Mormonism to Atheism: Confessions of an Anonymous Coward
In America, at least, a great many atheists weren't raised as atheists - they grew up with some sort of religion, usually a form of Christianity, and later left it. This journey away from religious faith is often difficult, but can also be very interesting as well. A few people are willing to document their journeys, helping others along the way.
Humanist Leads UN Organization on Religion
Can a humanist and an atheist really lead a United Nations organization dedicated to religion? Yes, when that organization is the Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) Committee on Freedom of Religion or Belief - and when that humanist is Matt Cherry, executive director of the Institute for Humanist Studies. On Thursday, May 25, he was re-elected to a second two-year term.
Larry Darby: Shoot or Hang Illegal Aliens
People in Alabama who vote for Larry Darby for attorney general will be voting to put in office a man who advocates hanging or shooting illegal aliens. It's not enough to simply impose martial law on Alabama, but illegal aliens would be hunted down like animals.
Ian McKellen: Bible Should Have 'Fiction' Label
Most people don't realize that actor Ian McKellen is an atheist - but if he is an atheist, what's he doing in the movie The Da Vinci Code? Simple: he thinks that it's a really good story (the book, at least - reviews indicate that the movie isn't as good). He's not bothered about playing a role in a fictional story, though he thinks that the Bible is just as fictional.
Larry Darby: Going Downhill, Picking Up Speed
I wrote recently about how Larry Darby appears to be going off the deep end %u2014 recent statements in the press, however, make him look even worse than before. He'll certainly lose badly, but I suppose that only means that he'll be looking for something else annoying to do with his time.
Bin Laden Urges Killing of Freethinkers
Osama bin Laden is not known for being tolerant of those who disagree with him. This means that he's probably least tolerant of freethinkers, given the fact that by definition freethinkers reject not just his assertions of religious authority, but the traditions of all religious authorities. Freethinkers strive for thoughts and ideas that are free; bin Laden strives to chain human minds.
Larry Darby Shilling for White Supremacism, Racism
Already having made a name for himself for anti-Semitism and Holocaust Denial, Larry Darby appears to be determined to push the envelope ever further by adopting ever more extreme and odious positions. If there was ever any doubt that Larry Darby is probably a White Supremacist and a racist, that was dispelled by his decision to travel to New Jersey to speak at a National Vanguard meeting.
Larry Darby Going Right Off the Deep End
Is there nothing that is too noxious, too hateful, too bigoted, and too insane for Larry Darby to say? I suppose that all political candidates have to distinguish themselves in some way - otherwise they won't even be remembered, much less get votes. Darby is certainly doing that and he seems to revel in negative attention. Maybe he's gotten used to being unable to get any other kind...
Is Larry Darby's Support Growing or Dwindling?
It's unfortunate, but a number of atheists are defending or even supporting Larry Darby's Holocaust Denial and Anti-Semitic drivel. This is a sad demonstration that being an atheist doesn't make a person more rational or more moral than a theist, but at least not everyone is buying the nastiness he is selling.
Reflections of a Pakistani Atheist
Popular depictions of Muslim nations portray such societies as if everyone were hard-core Muslims. This is certainly how religious and political authorities would like their nations to be thought of and it's how they want their societies to be structured - but it's not really true. There is dissent and disagreement in these nations, even including atheism. It just has to be anonymous.
Atheist Wins Discrimination Suit Against Catholic School
Last year, I wrote about David McNab, a math teacher in a Catholic school near Glasgow who was denied a promotion to "teacher of pastoral care" because he's an atheist. McNab sued and won - he was awarded £2000 in a ruling with wider implications for sectarian schooling.
Democrats Should Abandon Secularism, Church/State Separation?
It seems that everyone has a different idea about what the Democrats should do in order to be more competitive with the Republicans, especially when it comes to national political races. Among the most absurd suggestions are to abandon basic progressive and liberal principles in order to win. Amy Sullivan, for example, seems to advocate giving up secularism and church/state separation.
Christian Conservatives Decry Atheists Seeking Equal Rights
Atheists in America are starting to become more assertive in their demands to be treated as fully equal citizens - and they are taking notes from the gay rights movement which has made such great strides in the past three decades. Gay rights activists have been enormously successful, and perhaps that's why religious conservatives aren't happy about atheists' new efforts.
Atheism is Foolish and Wrong?
Have you ever read the "God Squad"? Rabbi Marc Gellman and Monsignor Thomas Hartman jointly write a column dealing with questions about religious issues and they never fail to denigrate atheism and nonbelievers whenever the issue arises. I guess it doesn't matter what sort of theism and religion you hold to, as long as it is some sort of belief in God. But woe to those who actually disbelieve!
Anti-Muslims Cartoons Connected to Atheism?
Was the publication of the cartoons which launched riots among Muslims the result of atheism? That seems too incredible to believe, but it's exactly the impression that some are trying to spread. Perhaps they hope to get conservative Christians to associate the cartoons with their own negative feelings about atheism and thereby acquire support for Muslim objections to the cartoons' publication.
Free Ordinations
Are you looking for more information on how to get ordained for free? It may sound strange, but quite a few atheists become ordained ministers. Some do it as a joke. Some do it as a way of showing that, just because a person is a minister, that doesn't automatically mean that their statements about religion should be given extra weight.
Theism in America: Belief in God Down to 82%
According to a poll done by Harris Interactive in December 2005, the number of those who believe in the existence of God is down to just 82%. Eight percent definitely don't believe in any gods and 10% aren't sure. The numbers of theists is still high, obviously, but this is quite a drop from just a couple of years ago.
Ignoring God: Atheists, Skeptics, and Humanists in America
There are a lot of people in America who don't pay any attention to gods - more than is generally realized, probably. Such a position is not just a minority view, however, it's also the subject of scathing criticism and outright bigotry. It's difficult for atheists and skeptics to come out and publicly acknowledge what they think.
Atheism vs. Citizenship
Is atheism compatible with being an American citizen? The Boy Scouts seem to have their doubts and President Bush (the first) said that "I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots." Certainly there are many Americans who share this view. What about non-citizens who are trying to obtain citizenship?
The Neglected Legacy of Joseph McCabe
Few people have heard of Joseph McCade, despite his importance not only in the history of American freethought, but also of efforts in America to disseminated knowledge and education to the widest possible audience. He read voraciously, not just to educate himself but also to help him educate others on all manner of subjects - history, science, technology, and more.
Should Atheists Take Atheism More Seriously?
It's been my experience that atheists spend a fair amount of time reading about and trying to understand religion and theism - perhaps more than most theists tend to do. Does this mean that atheists take religion seriously? Perhaps, but some seem to think that atheists don't even take atheism as seriously as they should.
Point of Inquiry: New Secular Humanist Podcast Available
Those of you who listen to podcasts can now enjoy one being put out by the Center for Inquiry, called Point of Inquiry.
Divine Intervention
A common belief in most theistic religions is that a god intervenes in the affairs of humans: helping some people, hurting others, and generally changing the course of events so that they better match whatever divine plan for humanity exists. Questions about the nature of this divine intervention have led many to question theism itself.
Changes at the Atheist Law Center
The Atheist Law Center has done a lot to raise the profile of atheists and their concerns in Alabama, but all that has recently been overshadowed by Larry Darby's antics with Holocaust Denial and "historian" David Irving. This may change now that Darby has stepped down as president in order to pursue elected office.
Protesters Picket Newdow's Home
In a demonstration of Christian love, charity, and compassion, Christians demonstrated in front of Michael Newdow's home on Sunday. The reason: they object to how he's trying to get the government to stop endorsing and promoting their beliefs. Apparently, it would be an infringement of their religious liberty if the state didn't favor their religion over other religions.
Atheists from Foxholes March
There are no atheists in foxholes? Actually, there are quite a few atheists in foxholes and there always have been. A few gathered together and marched in Washington, D.C., on Veterans' Day to demonstrate that they exist, that they served their country, and that they aren't any less patriotic or American simply because they don't believe in any gods.
Atheists Among Us
There are atheists, agnostics, skeptics, humanists, freethinkers, and non-believers of all sorts throughout society. Many believers act as though atheists were some strange species with little relation to humanity when the truth is that there are probably more atheists in the circle of people you know than you realize.
Atheism, Intelligent Design, and Ignorance
The teaching of any form of creationism, including Intelligent Design, is typically endorsed by religious conservatives and fundamentalists. Critics commonly assume that the reason for this is their desire to promote their religious ideology, but there is also more at work: basic ignorance of science.
Conservatives Mobilizing Against Atheists
Michael Newdow, who is still working on a legal challenge to the phrase 'under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance, is now also working on a legal challenge to the use of the phrase 'In God We Trust' on the nation's money. Unhappy with how much publicity he got in his previous legal cases, religious conservatives are already mobilizing to smear him and his arguments.
Is Modern Culture Atheistic?
For a lot of Christians, 'atheist' is a label designed to denigrate, not describe. People who don't adhere faithfully to religious doctrines are 'practical atheists.' The broader culture is 'atheistic' because if fails to embody or enforce the religious dogmas which someone deems critical. Is any of this sensible or reasonable? No.
Atheists Speaking Out, Organizing
In America, atheists have always been a relatively small and ignored minority. This may be changing, though: concerned with what they view as the increasingly theocratic direction of American politics, many atheists are organizing politically. Atheists don't traditionally "join" groups very much, suggesting that a fundamental shift in thinking and attitude may take place.
Profile of Atheist Lobbyist Lori Lipman Brown
Lori Lipman Brown, the new lobbyist for the Secular Coalition for America, is attracting increasing attention. This is expected, I guess, given the fact that she is the first and only lobbyist for atheists, atheist groups, and atheist interests in Washington. The question is, will media attention translate into legislative attention?
No Theists in Foxholes?
Some people like to claim that there are 'no atheists in foxholes,' implying that when faced with a life-threatening situation, atheists will suddenly start believing in God. Not only is this not true, but in fact there are many cases where theists become atheists because of their experiences in a foxhole.
Atheist Attracting Attention Over Holocaust Denial Speech
Larry Darby, the president of Alabama's Atheist Law Center, is attracting increasing attention for his antics. Having David Irving, a notorious Holocaust Denier, anti-Semite, and apologist for fascism, speak at his group was just the first step. Now, his efforts to justify his actions keep digging him in deeper and deeper.
Atheism and Dating
Religion is so important to many people's lives that they can't imagine not sharing it with others, thus preventing them from dating people outside their religion - or with no religion at all. This can be especially problematic for atheists who not only lack religion, but any belief in gods at all. This puts a lot of people off.
Christian Thugs Using Violence to Silence Dissent
It's common when someone says something particularly vile and bigoted that they defend themselves by saying that they are only 'joking' and that those who take offense simply don't have a sense of humor. Occasionally this might be a fair defense, but often it's just an attempt to evade taking responsibility for one's comments and ideas.
Apology for 'Atheists in Foxholes' Comment
It's all too common to hear people insist that there are no atheists in foxholes, or in whatever disaster is occurring. They would know better if they simply bothered to do a little research instead of relying upon popular prejudice. Much rarer is to hear a retraction and apology from someone making such a comment.
Homosexuality and Atheism: A Parallel
There are a number of ways that the experiences of gays and atheists in America parallel each other. Both, for example, have the problem of living "in the closet" or "coming out" to friends and family. Both also have to contend with the fact that too many Americans consider homosexuality, atheism, or both to be completely unacceptable under any circumstances.
Atheism: How Do We Know?
Some people object to atheism by asking how we can know for certain that no gods exist. Aside from misunderstanding the nature of atheism, this questions should cause religious believers to look more closely at their own position. After all, if certainty is necessary, their own inability to be certain should cause them to reconsider their religion.
Godless Lobbyist vs. Bill O'Reilly
A couple of days I wrote about the new secular lobbyist haunting the halls of Congress, Lori Lippman Brown. She dared appear on the Bill O'Reilly show and poor Bill didn't come out of it very well. I'll bet he doesn't make that mistake again.
Society is Worse off when God is on Its Side
A recently published study claims that there is a strong correlation between social dysfunction and high rates of religiosity. The more people believe that God is on their side and the side of the nation, the worse off that society is when compared to more secular societies.
Secular Lobbyist Infuriates Christians
Lori Lipman Brown, a former Nevada state senator, has been made the first-ever lobbyist for non-religious Americans by the Secular Coalition for America. She has a lot of work ahead of her and she'll be very much alone. Curiously, the mere presence of an atheist lobbyist has outraged some Christians.
Mistakes Christians Make when Dealing with Atheists
Just about every atheist online has the experience of debating religion and theism with Christians. These atheists can almost universally attest to the same negative experiences, too, of Christians who don't support their claims, employ numerous logical fallacies, and just generally do a poor job at reasoned discussion.
Atheist Family Values
Most Americans understand that it's wrong to express bigotry towards Jews or Muslims, even if they can't overcome bigoted feelings towards them. This isn't the case with atheists, though: many Americans continue to think that it is OK to denigrate people merely because they don't believe in gods.
Atheist Women Envy Muslim Women?
Islamic tradition forces women into an inferior role in society because it is assumed that men won't be able to control themselves around women. Instead of blaming men and getting men to exercise self-control, women are segregated for the good of society. Some Muslims can't seem to understand why everyone doesn't think this is a good idea.
Fundamentalist Atheists?
It doesn't happen too often, but every once in a while someone responds to atheist critiques of religion or theism by labeling the person as a "fundamentalist" atheist. The label is, however, problematic because there are no essential or "fundamental" beliefs for an atheist to be "fundamentalist" about.
Atheists Ashamed of Christianity
Christianity is a dominant force in America - but is it a force for good? Christians certainly seem to think so and they act like it's the best possible influence that a nation can have. For many others, though, Christianity is not only not a good influence, but as practiced in America it's actually an embarrassment.
Carnival of the Godless
Welcome to the 22nd Carnival of the Godless, where some of the more interesting writings from a godless perspective are listed, discussed, and promoted. We have a very interesting collection of posts here this week that deal with a wide variety of issues, so let's not delay any further!
Life, Love, and Atheism
I am an Atheist, that is: I do not believe in gods. I do not believe in God nor in the Devil. I was raised by an Atheist woman and a Buddhist man. I did not "choose" at some point in my life to renounce my faith in God and I did not suffer any kind of "evil trauma" that made me forsake God....
Propaganda vs. Art
Art, and particular the use and function of art, are hotly debated topics. This is particularly true in the context of politics, which might seem strange, but the political uses of art are widely disputed. Some don't think that art should take political stands; others argue that there is no such thing as non-political art.
Christianity Dying Out in Faithless Australia
According to Pope Benedict XVI, mainstream Christianity is dying out in Australia - and more quickly there than in any other nation. So, what can I do to either replicate that in America or simply emigrate to Australia? And is there anyplace in Australia that isn't distressingly hot?
America's War on Godless Communism and Religious Doubters
Atheists are perhaps America's most despised minority; evangelical Christians pretend that they are persecuted, but they, their policies, and their attitudes are what create genuine prejudice and bigotry against other groups like atheists. Where did all this hostility come from? It's arguably a legacy of the 1950s battle against communism.
Wisconsin: Equal Rights for Atheists in Prison
The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that inmates' religious liberties include allowing atheists to conduct study groups. So long as the atheists consider it a matter of religion and religious liberty, prison officials must respect their wishes as much as the wishes of Christians. The Christian Right is already spinning this and distorting it.
Vermont: Atheist Running for Senator
It's something of a truism that atheists can't get elected to public offices in America, but one atheist is trying to prove that wrong. In Vermont, Bernard Sanders is already a Representative and is trying to be elected to the Senate in 2006.
Becoming an Atheist in India
There are as many different routes to atheism as there are atheists. Despite this, many atheists' stories still sound familiar because there are so many similarities in human experience - we are all more alike than we are different, so can readily recognize something of ourselves in the experiences of others.
Voting for Atheists
Despite what we sometimes hear about "hostility" towards religion in America, there is far more hostility towards atheists - and what hostility towards religion that does exist is typically directed at religious minorities. For some reason, though, the people who complain loudest are the ones responsible for all that hostility.
Lance Armstrong and God
One of the most recognizable athletes in the world today is Lance Armstrong. Winner of an unprecedented (and unlikely to be matched) seven Tour de France races and survivor of cancer, Lance Armstrong is a powerful example of what a human being can do when they dedicate themselves to a cause. Moreover, he is an example that it can all be done without religion and without gods.
What it Takes to Declare Yourself an Atheist
There are many more atheists in the world than people who are willing to admit to being an atheist. In large part because of the social stigma attached to disbelieving in gods, many people prefer to hide their atheism and pretend to be theists. What does it take for them to come out of the closet?
Journey to Atheism
There are many different paths which people take to atheism. Some are raised atheists. Some are raised in very religious environments and then abandon religion later in their lives. Some are raised in vaguely religious environments, become more religious on their own, and then turn away from religion eventually. Every story is a little different.
Britain: Humanists Snub Cemetery Service
In Suffolk, a humanist group is refusing to attend the ceremonies at the opening of a new cemetery because, they say, the services will be too religious. Apparently this is a public cemetery where one would expect less of a push to promote Christianity, but Christianity is the only religion in evidence.
Coffee Shop Kicks Out Atheists
In Homewood, Alabama, the Cool Beans coffee shop has informed a local atheist group that they can no longer use the place to meet. Local religious groups will continue to meet there, which means that the shop is likely violating federal anti-discrimination laws. Rather than file suit, the atheists are organizing a boycott.
18th Carnival of the Godless
Saint Nate hosts the 18th Carnival of the Godless, which is now available. He links to articles from Steve Pavlina, Darksyde, Ebon Musings, and more.
Atheism in Singapore
It's common for theists to assume that atheists disbelieve in gods because they haven't been properly introduced to the subject. Christians think that we must not have heard the "Good News" of their gospel. Muslims think that we haven't learned about the Koran. Quite the opposite is usually true %u2014 usually, atheists are quite familiar with religion and were religious once themselves.
Atheist Exposed: Coming Out to Friends and Family
One of the most difficult things for many atheists is coming out to friends and family. Many don't even do it, preferring to hide their beliefs rather than risk the ridicule and rejection so many have to endure. For atheists, coming out can be as difficult as it is for gays.
Atheists, Anti-Semitism, and Holocaust Denial
Atheists are generally committed to the principle of free speech, especially where criticism of religion is concerned. Should this commitment lead atheists to give a platform to Holocaust Deniers and help them spread their disinformation?
17th Carnival of the Godless
Tobias S. Buckell hosts the 17th Carnival of the Godless, which is now available. He links to articles from PZ Meyers, Brent Rasmussen, Hank Fox, and more
Atheism in Taiwan
Evidently Taiwan is a good place for atheists - the people there are highly tolerant of religious beliefs in general and a significant percentage are atheists themselves. Evangelists, however, have a tougher time. Their religion may be respected, but their attempts to convert people are not thought of very highly.
Gay & Atheist in the Islamic World
Neither gays nor atheists are accorded much respect in the Muslim world. The same used to be the same in the Christian world, but the Christian West has progressed to the point where there are at least pockets of acceptance and tolerance; in Islam, though, such tolerance is hard to come by. Far more common are hatred, vilification, and even violence.
Nebraska: Man's Name Revealed in Ten Commandments Case
In Plattsmouth, Nebraska, an atheist is challenging the presence of a Ten Commandments monument in the public park. His identity had been kept secret because of fears he had for his safety, but a federal judge decided not to stop newspapers from revealing his name so the Omaha World-Herald decided to go ahead and do so.
Can Atheism Be Proven?
Most theists seem to think that the existence of their god can be proven. Is it possible, however, for a broader disbelief in the existence of any gods be "proven"? Is it possible to prove that no gods can or do exist? Probably not, no.
Humanism, Definitively
In America, humanism tends to be a maligned philosophy. If you just listened to the Christian Right, you'd have to conclude that humanism is the next worse thing after Nazi ideology (although gay rights seems to be taking that place lately). Some people, though, are coming to realize that humanism isn't so bad after all.
Patterns of Atheism Around the World
Many theists try to argue that there is an innate connection between religion (especially religious theism) and morality, such that irreligious atheists cannot be trusted to be moral. Just how justified is such an assertion? Well, the empirical data we have suggests that it is completely false.
UK's First Humanist Wedding
Britain has an active and old humanist movement, but until now Britain's humanists haven't had the opportunity to perform their own weddings. In Edinburgh's zoo, Karen Watts and Martin Reijns were united in a historic ceremony. Hopefully there will be many more in the future.
What if I'm Wrong About Christianity?
A common question raised by Christians is what atheists think about the possibility that they might be wrong about Christianity. Aren't we afraid of what will happen if we learn that we have been wrong? Isn't that worth converting?
The God Who Wasn't There: Film Review
"In the first six minutes, the host and creator, Brian Flemming, intertwines clips and stock footage of early b/w religious films to tell a "quick summation" of the story of Christ, "in six minutes." Every once in a while a clock-indicator will flash onto the screen, to let you know where you are in the running time and how much time is left. It's really quite funny, and entertaining."
David Bowie, Reluctant Atheist?
Apparently, David Bowie is nearly an atheist or perhaps a "reluctant" atheist. I have to wonder how many other people are in a similar position - nearly an atheist, but still holding on to a little bit of theism out of worry or fear or concern?
Discrimination Against Atheists in New York
Tim Shortell, an atheist, was recommended to become chair of the sociology department of Brooklyn College. Unfortunately for Shortell, some Christians didn't like comments he made outside work about religion and they managed to bring enough pressure to bear that he withdrew his name.
Atheist Churches?
There are a couple of "atheist churches" out there. Some feel that "churches" are inappropriate for irreligious atheists. Others argue that whatever gets atheists together in a community will ultimately be good, even if the terminology is uncomfortable.
Atheism in Ireland
Actually being an atheist/humanist in Ireland is very easy. Easier, I would imagine, than the US. In the US, as you know, not believing in God is considered somehow un-American. The strongest Irish nationalists, on the other hand, are often socialists/republicans (in the Irish rather than US sense of the word republican) so nobody accuses atheists of not being 'Irish'.
Atheists in Foxholes - From a Marine
I am writing to you about something that I seen on your web page. Looking at my Email address you can probably guess that I am a U.S. Marine, I am also an atheist, which can be kind of difficult sometimes with my mostly religious peers. With this being said, I have some experience with the foxhole conversions, but my view is a little different than most.
Atheism: Why Bother?
One question that I see every so often is why I and other atheists bother to discuss and debate atheism publicly. After all, if we simply don't believe in any gods, why bother with the subject any further than that? Why bother bringing it up and debating it?
Responses to Case of Atheists' Son Being Denied a Teaching Job
A few days ago I wrote about how Richard Sherman, son of atheist activist Rob Sherman, had a job offer withdrawn - perhaps in retaliation for his father's activism. There has been some reaction to the story, both negative and positive.
Atheism, Belief, and Religion
Many religious theists simply don't understand atheism. Because their theism and their religion are such central aspects of their personal identity, it's understandable that something as foreign as atheism may be difficult to comprehend. Less understandable is how these people don't even seem to try - but there are good resources available for them.
A Catholic's Observations about Christians & Atheists
Many conservative, evangelical Christians have an aversion to atheists - unless it's to target them for conversion - that is often based upon myths and misunderstandings. Unfortunately, their attitude that they represent a higher and more moral position is often contradicted by their own actions.
Atheist and Proud Of It
Many people don't like the "atheist" label and, even if it would accurately describe them, they go out of their way to avoid using it. They would rather be known as agnostics, secularists, or anything else other than atheists. Some, though, come to realize that there's nothing wrong with the label, but there is something wrong with those who vilify atheists.
Consequences of Saying Atheism is a Religion
There is an all-too-common habit among conservative religionists to label all manner of things a "religion" when they really aren't. Targets of this include atheism, secular humanism, evolution, and more. This isn't just an error, it's an error that helps produce even more serious errors down the road.
Reasons for Atheism
Many religious theists attribute all sorts of negative motives to people who are atheists. Alleged reasons for atheism include rebellion against parents, a desire to act immorally without retribution, and so forth. Reality, though, is quite different.
Atheism and the Appreciation for Life
Some people have the impression that atheists can't appreciate life because atheists don't believe in gods and, typically, any sort of afterlife. Just the opposite is usually the case: because of the absence of any afterlife, atheists have a heightened appreciation for what they have here and now.
Are Atheists Tolerant or Intolerant of Christianity?
One of the complaints that many atheists have about America is the way that many Christians in America are intolerant of minority religious faiths and of atheism. Is it, however, possible that atheists themselves are actually intolerant of Christianity?
Scotland: Atheist Teacher a Second-Class Citizen
David McNab teaches math in a Catholic high school near Glasgow. He was denied a promotion to the position of "teacher of pastoral care" because he is an atheist and has since taken the case to an employment tribunal. It's strange that an atheist would want such a position, but he may have a case.
Blogsnark: Discrimination Against Atheists in Hiring
Some people like to falsely claim that prejudice against faith is the last acceptable prejudice in America. When was the last time, though, you heard of someone saying that they would refuse to hire Christians or theists? We can find just that, however, being said against atheists.
Atheists' Son Denied a Job Because of Father?
Richard Sherman is the son of Rob Sherman, a Chicago-area atheist who has been a thorn in the side of local government officials for many years. Richard was offered a job at Schaumburg High School and even signed a contract, but that was rescinded and it looks a lot like this happened because of Richard's father.
Atheism Lite?
Dylan Evans recently wrote an article for the Guardian criticizing atheists' approach to religion and arguing that religion should be treated like a kind of art. There have been many very good criticisms of Evans' ideas about both religion and art %u2014 but few defenses.
Religious Atheism?
Atheism does not necessarily imply that one is irreligious - there are any number of religions which are atheistic in one fashion or another. The voice of religious atheists tends to be relatively muted, but that may change in the future.
Atheists Protesting Anti-Atheist UK Program
UKTV has apparently broadcast a program named "Christmas Under Fire" which has one episode with a man saying that the Nazis were atheists. Atheists in the UK have attempted to get UKTV to correct this error, but instead they have simply played the episode again.
Denmark: Atheist Back in the Pulpit Again
Reverend Thorkild Grosboell, the Danish Lutheran minister who made headlines around the world after he was sacked for coming out as an atheist, has renewed his vows and will return to his pulpit. He has promised to remain faithful to the beliefs of the church, but also hasn't retracted his statements that caused the furor in the first place.
Pascal's Wager: What's It Really About?
Most people, including myself, have treated the infamous "Pascal's Wager" as a serious argument for convincing skeptics that it's reasonable to believe in a god. Is it possible, though, that Pascal had something a little different in mind?
Harvard Humanists: End of an Era
Thomas Ferrick is a former priest and one of the few humanist chaplains on American college campuses. This summer he is retiring and Harvard's humanists are looking forward in the hope of creating an even better future.
Antony Flew: Atheist or Theist? The Book is Out
Well, Antony Flew's new book is out - or, to be more specific, the new edition of his old book is out. I don't have it yet myself, but apparently there's nothing new in the main text itself; instead, all the new material is in a short introduction. So what does Antony Flew say about atheism and theism? Does he come out to say that he is now a theist of some sort?
Toward a New Enlightenment
The Council for Secular Humanism will be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. From October 27th through the 30th, they will be hosting a conference in Amherst, New York, on the Enlightenment, secular democracy, moral education, science, and the importance of Enlightenment values.
Humanism in Ireland
As difficult as it can be to be a humanist in America, it must be even more difficult in a place like Ireland where the Catholic church has been an established power for so long and where religion has been a core feature in decades of violent conflict.
I'll Pray for You
Why do people say that they will pray for you? Praying doesn't actually accomplish anything - even if you believe in a god, that god will do what it intends regardless of whether one prays or not. Praying can't accomplish any changes one way or the other.
Let Atheists Back Into Politics
More people would vote for a female or gay politician than an atheist. Why? The bigotry of such an attitude would be obvious if "atheist" were replaced by "Jew" or "Hispanic." Theists don't seem to see any problem with this bigotry and then get annoyed when atheists stand up to complain about it.
Religious Atheists: Just As Bad as Religious Theists?
There are some atheists who seem to think that merely disbelieving in any gods automatically makes them superior to to theists. Somehow, being an atheist is perceived as being better, but is such an attitude really justified?
Idaho: Unconstitutional Favoritism
The Idaho Atheists reserved use of the Statehouse steps on May 5. The government decided to kick them out, though, because that's the National Day of Prayer and on that day Christians get special treatment - privileges not available to others, like atheists.
Thank God for Violence Against Atheists
It's not often that Christians openly praise violence against atheists, but sometimes a few of them show their true colors. A story has been going around the internet recently describing an atheist professor who dares God to knock him off his platform and a student who comes up and hit him until he falls off the platform.
Being an Atheist
One experience that many atheists have is the bewilderment of theists over how a person can be moral and good without believing in a god. Their attitude seems to be that morality cannot exist without some sort of god, and preferably their god. Ergo, atheists must be fundamentally immoral - but that's obviously not true.
Atheist's Wager
Many Christians attempt to persuade atheists to change by using Pascal's Wager (though many don't use that label and seem unaware of its origin). They argue that it's "safer" to "bet" on the existence of their god because, if it exists, then believers go to heaven and the rest go to hell. This is a very poor argument and there are many flaws, but can atheists offer an alternative?
Does God Necessarily Exist?
One popular argument for the existence of God says that God necessarily exists - it's simply not possible for God not to exist. Therefore, God exists. Sound convincing? No, it doesn't sound convincing to me either and there are good reasons not to buy it.
Prayers for Austin Cline
The last time I had a group of people praying for it, it was at Princeton University because I was starting a campus group for atheists and freethinkers. Now I have my name put on a web site (along with hundreds of atheists) for the specific purpose of praying for me.
Theists Having it Both Ways
Many religious conservatives act as though atheism and humanism are necessarily religions, something that I've commented on more than once here. This isn't always the case, though - this argument is used when it's convenient, but when it's not convenient we find people arguing that atheism and humanism aren't religions.
Lego Churches & Atheism
Atheists commonly don't have much time for traditional religion, but what about the art and architecture that is created in the context of religion? Sometimes atheist can dismiss that as well, but some of it is quite stunning.
Greetings from the Czech Republic
I've written a couple of times about atheism and religion in the Czech Republic. Recently, someone from the Czech Republic wrote to me about his impressions of atheism and religion in America.
What's Wrong with Non-Religious Teens?
A recent survey suggests, according to some, that religious teens do better on almost every measure of mental, social, and psychological health. If you believe the survey's authors, you'd conclude that there is something very wrong about being nonreligious - unless, of course, you take a closer look at the survey.
Newdow's USD $1 Million Judgment Set Aside
An earlier judgment that Michael Newdow won for being libeled by Rev. Austin Miles has been set aside. Many Christian Right sites are touting this as a victory, but it isn't quite the victory that they pretend.
Pittsburghers of Little Faith
Slowly, gradually, atheists are becoming better organized. One area that has experienced a resurgence is Pittsburgh. Not long ago the Pittsburgh Secular Humanist group was languishing, but today there are over 100 members and it's moving strongly, confidently into the future.
Easter Message: Atheism is Justified
Easter may be a Christian holiday, now that Christians have co-opted it so thoroughly, but that doesn't mean that atheists have nothing to say to mark the occasion. It's a perfect day to point out that, unlike Christianity, atheism is rationally jusified.
Atheist Charities Scam?
Have you received emails from "Atheist Charities," promising to help people in need in a manner consisting with secular, atheistic perspectives? I have and so have a lot of other atheists, but you shouldn't send them money because they sound like a scam.
British State School Bans Atheists
A publicly funded school in Britain is openly refusing to admit the children of atheists or humanists. Other schools are suspected of doing the same, but this is the first school to acknowledge the bigoted policy.
Christian Pests in Philadelphia
American Atheists held a convention in Philadelphia this past weekend, but local Christians weren't happy about it. They thought it appropriate to stand outside with bullhorns in order to harass people inside.
Smug Theism
Many theists look down upon atheists, convinced that atheists are pitiful creatures for not "seeing the light" and recognizing the existence of God. How and why would such an attitude develop?
Bhagat Singh on Atheism
Atheism, skepticism, humanism, and secularism all have a strong presence in India, but far too many in the West are completely unaware of this or of any of the material produced by people there. This is unfortunate because there is plenty we can learn from them...
Michael Schiavo Accused of Atheism
If I had thought about it, I probably would have expected it. People who disagree with what is being done to Terri Schiavo have reached down in to the blackest depths of their hearts and come up with the worst insult they can think of: they call him an atheist.
Germany: Secular Rites of Passage
Both Catholics and Protestants have "confirmation" ceremonies - rites of passage from youth into adulthood when one is expected to be mature enough to voluntarily assume responsibility for one's religious faith. But what about atheists? Are there any similar rites of passage for children who don't have religion and don't believe in any gods?
Christians as Friends
Can atheists develop friendships with Christians? Obviously it depends upon the people in question, but it's also obvious that traditional, orthodox Christianity can place a lot of barriers in the way of a friendship. After all, the atheist is likely going to hell and denies the truth of much of what the Christian holds dear. How can a friendship develop in spite of such things?
Wisconsin: School Board Member Resigns Over 'Atheist' Slur
During the summer, Teri Wagner of the Cedarburg School Board in Wisconsin got into a contract dispute with the basketball coach. During an email exchange with a church employee, Wagner thought that an appropriate slur to use against Ben Siebert would be to call him an "atheist." Wagner has now resigned.
Chaplain Comments on Antony Flew
Evangelical Christians continue to talk about the apparent "conversion" of Antony Flew to theism. Whether that conversion will ultimately prove true remains to be seen, but the manner in which some Christians have reacted reveals a lot about their nature of their thinking in general.
Nonbelievers Organizing to Oppose GOP
Although many atheists and skeptics are conservative Republicans, a far larger percentage has begun to organize against President Bush and the GOP. Regardless of their political leanings, they are worried about the increasing dominance of the Christian Right in America and they are determined to fight it.
South Carolina: Atheist's Invocation Denied
In Anderson, South Carolina, an atheist wants to counter the common Christian invocations given at council meetings with his own secular humanist invocation. The Christian invocations are given by council members who are denying Michael Deanhardt the opportunity to offer something different.
Village Atheist Syndrome
Have you ever met a "village atheist"? You'd know if you had - such a person is an atheist and a freethinker, but they can also be highly aggressive, intolerant, and even abusive when people disagree with them. Quite simply, they "don't play well with others" and are difficult to deal with on a number of levels.
Atheist Sister-in-Law
What should a theist do if their atheist sister-in-law wants to participate in some aspects of a holiday, but not in any of the religious events? For example, what if the atheist sister-in-law is willing to join the family for dinners and gifts at Christmas, but not in church services? If you're a petulant theist, you'll try to condition everything on religion.
Conservatism, Atheism, and Gay Marriage
Can conservatives be atheists? Can conservatives support gay marriage? There is some debate among conservatives on these issues and not always a lot of consensus.
How to Talk to An Atheist?
Do Christians know how to talk to atheists? That isn't very likely. The biggest problem is probably that Christians, but especially conservative evangelical Christians, have no idea what atheism is or what atheists think. Everything that they think they know about atheism they have acquired from evangelical writers who promote more myth than truth, more prejudice than knowledge.
How To Avoid God?
How can one ensure that they become and remain an atheist? Most atheists would probably answer something along the lines of a continuing study of philosophy, logic, and religion. So long as one consistently applies standards of skepticism and critical thinking to theistic claims, remaining an atheist shouldn't be tough. Believers disagree.
Atheism & Natheism
There's a new word being tossed around: nathiesm. It was invented by atheists who are uncomfortable with the more common definition of "atheism" as the absence of belief in gods. There are still atheists out there who insist on atheism being a philosophy rather than simply a corollary to theism.
Antony Flew & Flawed Science
More people are noticing the very disappointing basis that Antony Flew is apparently using for his "conversion" to theism. Far from reasoned philosophical or scientific arguments, Flew is apparently relying upon shoddy scholarship and sloppy reasoning.
Is Bigotry Against Atheists OK?
In many quarters of society, bigotry and discrimination against atheists is considered acceptable. People who wouldn't dream of treating Jews or blacks worse than white Christians will think nothing of treating atheists as if they didn't merit the same basic social or civil rights. Such attitudes reach right up to the presidency.
Bush Doesn't Think Atheists Can Be President
We should all know by now that it's unlikely that an atheist will ever be elected president in America - bigotry and discrimination are far too widespread and are unlikely to end, at least any time soon. Apparently George W. Bush not only agrees that an atheist won't be elected president, but in fact believes that an atheist can't be a decent president.
Update on Antony Flew, God, and Sloppy Scholarship
Many continue to write about Antony Flew's apparent conversion from atheism to some form of theism. This is an interesting phenomenon, considering just how little information exists and, hence, how little reason there is to keep talking about it until new information appears. People should have waited to hear more before treating Flew's change as something worth holding up as a good example.
Freedom of Atheist Expression
Even in relatively liberal areas, it can be difficult or dangerous for atheists to reveal who they are. Christians like to complain about being persecuted, but you'd be hard-pressed to find Christians who are fired to trying to organize a prayer group.
Atheists, Humanists Seek Higher Profile
The growth of religious fundamentalism around the world has caused atheists and humanists to start looking for new ways to promote alternatives. Freethought, skepticism, and rationalism have a lot to offer, especially when compared to fundamentalist dogmatism, but getting people to even know about the alternatives can be difficult.
Atheism, Theism, and Violence
Quite a few religious believers try to argue that religion and theism are necessary for morality; the implication is that atheism is incompatible with morality in some fashion. Why is it, then, that atheists aren't more immoral and committing more crimes?
No Atheists in Foxholes?
When I last wrote about the claim that there are no atheists in foxholes, that time from Navy Chaplain McAlexander, I received a response from a veteran who knows all about being in foxholes and not needing any gods to get through it.
Australia: Axe Attack on Atheists
On November 18, 2001, Ashley John Appoo killed John Leslie McDonald and seriously injured his wife, Alois McDonald, in Brisbane. Why? Because he discovered that they were atheists. Yes, being an atheist is reason enough to die - even though the couple had taken in Appoo, a drifter, and cared for him over two days.
Antony Flew, Atheism, and Theism
A lot of people have been writing about Antony Flew's apparent conversion from atheism to theism, but everyone is focusing far more on who Flew is rather than on why this change might be occurring. Being less concerned with "why" than "who" says something about a person.
Making Atheism America's Official Religion
There is a common belief that when the government doesn't endorse or support some particular religion, it is necessarily endorsing or supporting atheism. This not only confuses atheism for something that is the opposite of religion, it's also confused about basic logic.
South African Atheism
One of the most difficult things about atheism is simply getting people to understand what it is in the first place. Most seem to get all of their information from biased Christian sources that display little or no interest in an fair and accurate assessment of atheists.
How Many Atheists in America?
Atheists appear to be a growing segment of the population - but how big of a segment? Decent figures seem hard to come by, perhaps because admitting atheism is as much of a social taboo as admitting homosexuality. Add in confusion about the definition of atheism and a very difficult situation is created.
Florida: Humanist Charter School to Open
Quite a few of the "charter schools" one hears about tend to be religious in nature, but recently a humanist charter school was approved by the Hillsborough County School District in Tampa, Florida. Religious conservatives lament the presence of "secular humanism" in public schools, but this will be the first time where they would be right.
Atheists Worried About Second Bush Term
Although there are plenty of conservative atheists, there are probably even more atheists (some conservative) who are not the least bit happy with the reelection of George W. Bush. The president's record on things like science, church/state separation, and religion gives atheists a lot of good reason to at least be concerned, if not positively scared.
Scientists Promoting Atheism?
It's not uncommon for Christians to imagine that science and scientists promote atheism. The reason for this seems to be the fact that science doesn't incorporate their god or promote belief in their god - therefore, or so the "logic" goes, science must be against their god.
Misunderstanding Religion, Atheism
One of the reasons why I have such extensive resources on the definition of atheism and the definition of religion is that, wherever I go, I find such extensive misunderstanding about those topics. Why? I'm not sure - but one apparent commonality is that so many don't seem to have done any research on the topics, aside from perhaps a quick glance at a short dictionary.
Science, Atheism, Religion
The Georgia lawsuit over disclaimer stickers in science texts continues to confuse people. All around the internet you can find writers who don't understand that evolution is science, creationism is religion, and that the debate has nothing to do with atheism.
Navy Chaplain Smears Atheists
The claim that there are no atheists in foxholes is common - so common, in fact, that even high-ranking officials feel no compunction at repeating the imprecation that people can't remain atheists in the face of danger or death. This apparently includes a U.S. Navy Chaplain.
Pennsylvania Nonbelievers: Atheist Activists
Atheists can be active in pursuing church/state separation and ensuring the maintenance of religious freedom in the face of persistent efforts by theocrats to overturn that freedom. It's not easy and it takes a lot of dedication, but we can all be thankful for the time and sweat invested by these people.
Nonbeliever vs. Atheist
Many people are bothered by the label "atheist." Some believe that it communicates incorrect information about them, for example that they think they know for sure that no god(s) can or do exist. Others fear that it carries too much emotional baggage. Thus, many seek out something more neutral and respectable-sounding, even if effectively means the same thing.
Atheism: Baseline Position for Humanity
Because many people misunderstand atheism as a statement of positive belief or even a label for a comprehensive worldview, they also have the mistaken assumption that atheists have a burden to prove the truth of their worldview. The reality of the situation is that atheism is the baseline or default position that needs no particular proof...
Numbers of Unchurched Americans Double
The increase of people who decline any religious affiliation continues to garner media attention. Right now only Catholics and Baptists outnumber the people who identify themselves as not having any religion (16%) and maybe, someday, people will start taking the nonreligious seriously.
Teaching Atheism = Teaching Religion?
Not everyone is pleased by the fact that Religion classes in Britain will start including atheism in the lessons. For some reason, the presence of an atheistic perspective on religion, theism, and ethics is perceived as minatory by some of the Christians who deign to comment on the matter.
Michigan: Eagle Scout Murders 62-year-old For Being Atheist
There are those who fiercely defend the fact that the Boy Scouts ban atheists from their ranks, arguing atheists lack the necessary qualities to be moral enough for the Scouts. I guess this difference in morality was demonstrated by the Eagle Scout who murdered a 62-year-old man simply for not believing in God.
Defining Atheism
Explaining the nature of atheism can be difficult. A lot of people have very deep misconceptions about the concept and while sometimes it is possible to help them understand the nuances of reality, it's always nice to find new and different ways to explain things. Sometimes one explanation won't work but a slightly different one will.
Teaching Atheism in Schools
Earlier this year I wrote about suggestions that British schools teach about atheism alongside Christianity in schools. Well, it looks like they will soon be doing just that - as well as teach about various minority religions.
Who Will Atheists Vote For?
It seems that atheists elsewhere in the world are curious as to how atheists in America will be voting in the upcoming presidential election. Which of the candidates best reflect the various interests of most atheists?
California Atheist Lives With Harassment
Atheists are often the victim of harassment and abuse if they dare to be open and outspoken about their beliefs. Not all communities are a problem, but enough are that most atheists just aren't willing to take the chance. There are simply too many stories about what others have had to endure.
Antony Flew Leaving Atheism?
Have you read the news about Antony Flew abandoning atheism? This would be big news because Flew is one of the most prominent atheist philosophers of the 20th century. It would be big news, that is, if it were true. Evangelical Christians are all a twitter over the possibility, but as usual they are taking words out of context and misrepresenting them to suit their own religious prejudices.
Atheism & Rights
One of the most common methods of "criticizing" atheism is to accuse atheists of lacking any basis for believing in morals, justice, rights, etc. For many religionists - and conservative evangelicals in particular - there is no reason to accept such concepts without a background belief in their God.
Top Ten Reasons for Not Being a Christian?
Many Christians find it amazing that everyone isn't a Christian. I mean, it's so obviously better than all the other choices, right? If someone isn't a Christian, it must be because they haven't heard of Christianity or have a mistaken understanding of it, right? Well, maybe not.
Daniel Dennett Recants Atheism?
Some may have read the claims from Robert Wright that Daniel Dennett, evolutionist and atheist, has essentially renounced both and embraced a theism-centered form of Intelligent Design. True? No - Wright is misrepresenting and distorting Dennett's words in a manner common to creationists.
Britain: 15% Have No Religion
A recent government study shows that 15% of all people in Britian describe themselves as having no religion. This actually isn't too far off from America, although such numbers aren't reported very often because it contradicts the popular view of America as a religious nation.
Agnosticism vs. Atheism
Many, many atheists have probably had the experience where someone has expressed surprise at learning that the person was an atheist. There seems to be a common attitude that anyone who is nice, polite, and moral could really be an atheist. A common response is to say "But maybe you're really just an agnostic?" Have you had this sort of experience?
Church for Atheists?
There seems to be quite a lot of misunderstandings about what sort of relationship might exist between atheism and religion. On the one hand are those who think that atheism is itself a religion, ignoring the fact that an absence of a belief cannot possibly qualify as a religion. On the other are those who think that being an atheist automatically means being a-religious as well.
Nebraska: Threats Against Atheist to Continue, Judge Rules
The Nebraska ACLU recently found itself in a curious position of arguing that the press should be silenced. Why? They didn't want the name of a plaintiff published because he fears retaliation against his legal efforts to have a Ten Commandments monument removed.
Danish Disbelief
Reverend Thorkil Grosboll in Denmark has made headlines at home and around the world for his challenges to the prevailing and traditional theological positions on God. He doubts the very existence of God, unforgivable for a man in his position, and his fate will be very interesting.
Washington: Candidate for Governor Calls Atheists
Conservative Republicans like to paint the Democrats as a "godless" party and it is true that Democrats tend to be more tolerant of religious diversity that includes nonbelievers. This does not mean, however, that there aren't Democrats who are bigoted against atheists - for example, Washington gubernatorial candidate Ron Sims.
Someone Notices 'Fish Wars' Again
Every so often someone notices all those different "fish" symbols on the backs of people's cars, realizes that they represent contradictory opinions, and decides that this would make an interesting story.
Eliminating Atheism Via Science
Quite a few religious people labor under the mistaken notion that science "proves" the truth of their beliefs; indeed, many think that science is doing more and more every year to prove their beliefs. So why do they think that not everyone agrees with them by now?
I'm An Atheist - So What?
Remember the atheist invocation in Tampa, Florida from a few days ago? The one so many theists reacted so badly to? Well, other atheists in the state are pointing out that there was no good justification for such a reaction.
Czech Republic: Missionaries Having Trouble
I've written before about the extent of atheism in the Czech Republic and how it is combined with a very low crime rate. Turns out that all this atheism makes it tough for Christian missionaries to get very far.
Center for Inquiry to Expand
The Center for Inquiry, located in suburban Buffalo, New York, is an important resource for both skeptics and humanists - but it's about to get better. They intend to launch an expansion project that will raise their profile as well as help them help others.
Fallout Over Atheist Invocation
A couple of days ago I reported on the bigots who walked out before an atheist could deliver an invocation at a Tampa city council meeting. They, according to reports, didn't want to have to listen to someone who didn't share their beliefs. Public reactions have been similar.
Florida: Bigots Walk Out on Atheist Invocation
In Tampa, Florida, an atheist was allowed to deliver an invocation before the meeting started - but three members (half the council) was so incensed that an atheist could be given the same consideration as a Christian that they walked out rather than stay and listen to what he had to say. Yes, religious tolerance and liberty are alive and well in Tampa.
U.S. Protestant Majority Eroding, Nonreligious Increasing
Protestant Christianity has long been a dominant force in American politics, culture, and society. Protestants continue to make up a majority of Americans, but it's a majority that has been dropping and may soon end altogether. At the same time, the numbers of nonreligious are growing dramatically
Atheists On Trial for Attacking Mosque?
It seems as though members of a Nigerian "atheist cult" are on trial for attacking a mosque and seriously injuring several Muslims who had been worshipping there. Atheist cults in Nigeria?
More on the Maryland Christian Bigot
A couple of days ago I wrote about the bigoted Maryland politician who made personal attacks against an elderly woman who simply thought it would be better of there weren't official public prayers before meals at a state-funded senior citizens' center. Turns out that Don Dwyer Jr. has quite a past.
Atheists Endorse Kerry/Edwards
The Godless Americans Political Action Committee has endorsed John Kerry for president - not a surprise, since it's long been obvious that President Bush doesn't have much respect for religious liberty generally and atheists in particular. Unfortunately, some might use this endorsement against Kerry.
Atheist Pastor Going to Court
Last year I wrote several times about Thorkild Grosboell, the Lutheran pastor in Denmark whose statements about the absence of God got him into hot water. He was supported by his congregation and reinstated by the local bishop, but the saga isn't over: he repeated his ideas again in June, has been removed, and now faces an ecclesiastic court. He could be sacked.
Responses to Ron Reagan's Interview
A few days ago I wrote about Ron Reagan's interview that appeared in the New York Times. People have been writing in to the newspaper and many aren't very happy with what he had to say - it seems that an outspoken atheist makes them uncomfortable.
Bigoted Maryland Politician Attacks Atheist Senior
Maryland resident Margaret Sayre used to enjoy lunches at a local senior center, funded at least in part by the state government, but she was bothered by the regular use of Christian prayers before each meal. She explored options to do something about it and got a scathing, vicious letter from a Maryland politician as thanks.
Atheists Believe In Nothing?
One common misunderstanding about atheism is the idea that atheists believe in nothing. Apparently, the absence of any beliefs means that when the government fails to promote Christianity, it must the necessarily be promoting atheism. Make sense? Of course not - it's idiotic, but some people believe it.
Responses to South African Atheist-Bashing
A few days ago I wrote about an atheist-bashing letter from John Rowland in Randburg, South Africa and published in The Star. I wasn't the only one to notice just how many misconceptions, myths, and falsehoods he repeated about atheism and atheists. Recently, The Star published a number of other responses.
Can We Be Good Without God?
Ethics is a common field of debate between theists and atheist. Perhaps the most basic disagreement is whether a moral system requires a belief in the existence of God. Theists commonly think so but atheists deny it. Can a good argument for the theistic position be made?
Atheism Is A Religion?
The idea that atheism is a religion is one of the most common and ridiculous myths that religious believers try to spread. What's especially annoying about this which separates it from just about all the other myths is that it requires such desperate twisting of logic and language that one has to wonder what is wrong with the people who repeat it.
Ron Reagan on Religion and Atheism
A year ago, I don't think that most people really cared; today, however, Ron Reagan's atheism and ideas about the relationship between religion and politics has been receiving a great deal of attention. I think that this is a good thing because he does a good job of representing a secularist perspective, even though it has led to some nasty attacks.
Atheists in Foxholes: Our Worst Enemy?
It is interesting to note how casually some people will attack atheists and atheism, associating them with the worst crimes imaginable without a second though even while ignoring the fact that those crimes are more commonly committed by theists and religious believers.
Iraqi Government Going After Atheists?
The transfer of sovereignty (which isn't full sovereignty, although that's the label being used) in Iraq took place two days early in order to surprise insurgents and terrorists. What are the goals of the new Iraqi government? To go after their biggest threat: atheists.
Atheism: The Root of Our Problems
Prejudice against and misunderstanding of atheism can be found all around the world - it isn't simply a feature of American's Christian Right. Wherever you go, you can probably find someone who is willing to make statements and judgments about atheism and atheists without really knowing what they are talking about.
Relationships for Secularists
Atheists, agnostics, and freethinkers are very much a minority in America; even worse, because of the distrust of nonbelievers, many are unwilling to publicly express what they really think. How, then, can such a person meet others socially, perhaps for the purpose of forming intimate relationships?
Is Secularism a Religion?
One common tactic of Christian apologists (the poor ones, at any rate) is to counter atheists' critiques of religion by arguing that atheism itself is a religion. Thus, atheism is said to suffer from the same flaws and problems. Now, for the first time, I see someone trying the same with secularism.
Hillary Clinton: Most Godless Senator?
All too often I see commentators on the right attempt to vilify and attack others by describing them as "godless,"? as "atheists,"? or otherwise insist that they aren't "real"? believers like others. These conservatives seem to believe that the mere accusation of disbelief should be sufficient to disqualify a person from serious consideration.
Charley Reese: Atheists Are Untrustworthy, Immoral
Atheists are probably the most distrusted group of people in America today - just about any other sort of person is more likely to get elected to public office than an atheist. Even more interesting is the fact that so few people even try to hide their prejudice and bigotry. For them, being hateful towards atheists is simply the normal part of life.
Archbishop: Engage Nonbelievers
Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, thinks that Christians should do more to engage unbelievers in dialogue. The purpose isn't to understand nonbelief but, of course, to better convert the nonbelievers.
Newdow Receives USD $1 million Libel Award
In July 2002, Austin Miles wrote a column claiming that Michael Newdow said that his daughter suffered 'emotional damage' from having to recite 'under God'? in the Pledge of Allegiance. This, Newdow said, was false and sued Miles for libel - and he won.
Atheistic Roots of Hindu Philosophy
Religion in India is not like religion in the West. Whereas western religion is preoccupied with God, Indian religion is not - indeed, it is arguable that 'God'? isn't a very relevant factor in Indian religion. What makes certain groups 'unorthodox'? is the fact that they don't accept the Vedas as the ultimate source of authority. Orthodox schools do.
More Atheists in Foxholes?
We don’t hear the claim that “there are no atheists in foxholes” quite as much today as before - people seem to have largely given up on it. That’s a good thing because, according to a recent study, there may be more atheists in foxholes and in the military than many realize.
Atheism Drives Soros' Hatred of Bush?
George Soros, a multi-billionaire who has decided to spend a fair amount of money to support the Democratic Party, evidently has religious conservatives worried - otherwise, they wouldn't be trying to use his atheism in order to smear and discredit him.
Sharp Increase in Unchurched Americans
According to the evangelical Barna Research Group, the number of "unchruched" Americans (people who retain religious beliefs, but who no longer belong to organized churches) has doubled since 1991. That's a pretty big jump and further reinforces the failure of churches in modern America.
Why Atheists Are Right About the Pledge
Conservative Christians in America like to complain about atheists. It seems that atheists are the biggest threat facing this republic and pose a tremendous danger to civil liberties. It's strange that this would be the case considering that atheists can't really get elected to public office and are commonly discriminated against.
Rush Limbaugh on Atheists
Rush Limbaugh is a major conservative spokesman, so it is perhaps understandable that he doesn't think highly of atheism and atheists. It would be helpful, however, if his criticisms of atheism were actually intelligent and informed rather than the same tired old arguments that we hear all the time.
Atheism in the Czech Republic
The Czech Republic appears to be one of the most disbelieving nations in Europe. According to one poll, only 33.6% of Czechs belong to a religion and only 11.7% attend services once a month or more. That's the lowest rate for any country in Europe aside from Estonia. So how does the Czech Republic compare in terms of things like crime to other, more religious nations?
No Freedom From Religion
People who don't know anything about a topic shouldn't put themselves in the position of offering their ill-informed opinions on it. That should be an obvious truism, something that everyone knows and everyone follows, but I'm sad to say that it's ignored on a constant basis - especially by those who feel it is their duty to tell others how awful atheists and secularists are.
Atheist Warden Punished for Refusing Training at Church
Last year I reported on an atheist prison warden in Ohio who, without realizing it, forced inmates to watch a television program that promoted evangelical Christianity. As a result, he was demoted - even though it should have been obvious that forcing religion on inmates was never his intention. Now he's being punished again for refusing to attending a training seminar at a church.
Alabama Atheists Still Being Denied Equal Treatment
Not long ago I reported on how atheists in Alabama were being denied equal treatment because politicians were refusing to sponsor their event in the same way that the events of religious groups were sponsored. Now, Gov. Bob Riley, Alabama Attorney General Troy King, State Auditor Beth Chapman, and State Treasurer Kay Ivey have joined in the refusal.
Believing at Will
Some people argue that it is possible to believe something simply by willing it - this attitude is reflected in our language, for example when someone says "you can believe that if you want to." But does it make sense to say that beliefs can be formed simply through acts of will? No.
Myth of Jesus?
Tom Harpur is described as "Canada's best-known religion writer" - and he is becoming even better known now that he has published book in which he argues that Jesus Christ didn't really exist. A former Anglican priest and Toronto Star religion editor for the past 35 years, he has adopted a position usually only seen among a few atheists. Yet, he is still a Christian
Pinker: No Scientific Evidence for God
There are a lot of people who would like to claim that there is scientific evidence for the existence of their god - but is there any merit to such claims? I don't think so and neither does Steven Pinker, Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology. He said just that during a speech at the Harvard Science Center.
Priest Was 'Godless,' Satanic Killer?
One of the ways in which prejudice against atheists comes out is the way everyone who does anything depraved gets described as an atheist, as godless, etc. It seems like no one can imagine a devout religious believer doing anything wrong. That's seems to be what's going on in Toledo, Ohio, where a Catholic priest has been charged with the murder of a nun 24 years ago.
Does Atheism Require Faith?
Every once in a while you hear the old canard about atheism requiring "more faith" than just about any sort of theism - not merely general theism, but even specific instances of theism, like Christianity, with all of their attendant theological structures and added beliefs. How can any sensible person make such unsupportable and ridiculous claim?
Atheists: Most Dangerous Americans
Madalyn Murray O'Hair described herself as the "most dangerous woman in America." It appears that such a perception of atheist has endured, even after her death: a University of Wisconsin Survey Center conducted last summer reveals that Americans consider atheists to be the most dangerous group in America, even ahead of Muslims.
Turning Down the Brights
The label "Bright," chosen in order to have something more positive for atheists and freethinkers than the label "atheist," has not met with universal acclaim among those the term was chosen to describe. In fact, a great many object to the apparent arrogance of it and refuse to use it at all.
Atheist Logo?
One thing that many atheists bemoan is the lack of unity among all the different atheists out there. Because of this some seek to create unifying organizations, unifying slogans, and even unifying logos. I'm not sure that any of these attempts will ever be successful, but they are at the very least interesting.
Criticizing Religion
You won't see a great deal of public criticism of religion in America. There will occasionally be criticism of some extremist forms of religion, that is true, but criticism of religion in general isn't that common - and those criticisms that are typically come from other religious people who simply disagree with a religion that is not theirs. Why?
Truth About Atheism
Atheists are perhaps the most reviled minority in society - even an openly homosexual candidate has a better chance of being elected to public office than an admitted atheist. Accompanying the revulsion are many myths and stereotypes about atheists and atheism.
Humanists Get Tax-Exempt Status in Canada
Both the United States and Canada have traditionally given preferential treatment to religious organizations which have sought tax-exempt status. Getting a similar designation for a secular group has often required meeting higher standards, but the Humanist Association of Toronto successfully fought for tax-exempt status despite government opposition.
Atheists Denied Equal Treatment?
It is an unfortunate experience of many atheists that their positions and idea aren't as tolerated as those of just about anyone else. This seems to be the reason behind the treatment of an atheist group in Alabama where no politician is willing to sponsor a "rainy day" location for a planned rally at the Capitol - even though they do sponsor such things for other groups all the time.
Atheism Not a Belief System
The Archbishop of Canterbury was speaking about atheism again recently - he got some things right and some things wrong. He correctly observed that atheism is not a belief system and that no twisting of the facts can make it look like one. Then he went to erroneously say that atheistic systems like humanism also aren't "belief systems." That makes no sense whatsoever.
Gays More Popular than Atheists
There has been a lot of recent media attention on the issue of gay marriage and, as a consequence, on gays in America generally. It appears that the general public opinion of gays still tends to be negative but despite that is gradually improving. It's even gotten to the point that gays are better regarded than atheists.
God Bless Atheists?
theists commonly challenge religious believers to support their claims and defend their beliefs. All too often, though, believers react badly to this and consider such challenges to be insult. This, I think, is a grave error on the part of believers.
Organized Atheists Bother the Christian Right
You may be aware of the Godless Americans Political Action Committee (GAMPAC). The Christian Right is taking notice, even as they try to dismiss it. They don't seem to like the idea of godless Americans organizing and getting active politically. True, the chances of success for GAMPAC may not be as great as it was for Christian groups, but the concern of the Christian Right is instructive.
Hostility Towards Atheists
One interesting thing that has come out of Newdow's attempt to have the phrase "under God" removed from the Pledge of Allegiance is that a lot of the usually-latent hostility towards atheists has come out in the open where it can be dissected and rebutted. The hostility even appears to exist among students, which leads one to wonder to what degree the Pledge itself might be responsible.
Atheists Not Welcome in Colorado?
The Atheist Alliance is holding its national convention this weekend in Colorado Springs, but Governor Bill Owens and Mayor Lionel Rivera have refused to extend them an official welcome - something normally done when groups hold conventions in Colorado or elsewhere. Atheists, evidently, may have the right to voice their opinions in Colorado but they certainly aren't welcome.
Godless Double in Ireland
Some interesting statistics from Ireland: the number of non-religious has doubled, the number of Catholics has dropped as a proportion of the population, and the numbers of Muslims and Orthodox Christians has increased (most of these latter two groups are immigrants).
Religion Waning in College
Many people discover, re-discover, or adopt a new religion while in college. It is, after all, the first time that they are away from home for such an extended period and this allows them to further develop as independent adults. New evidence indicates, however, that many students are also leaving religion completely while in college.
Fanatical Atheists Fighting God
A "fanatic" is someone who is motivated by extreme emotions for an unreasonable cause. Are atheists "fanatics" if they wish the government to stay out of religious matters? That isn't unreasonable. Are atheists and Buddhists "fanatics" for not wanting the Pledge of Allegiance to take sides on theological matters - like saying that this nation is "under God"?
Jefferson, Madison, Newdow?
Most Americans probably don't agree with Michael Newdow's efforts to strip the phrase "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance - but at the same time, most efforts to expand religious freedom against the desires of the majority have been unpopular. Newdow's efforts place him squarely in an American tradition that is always unpopular when it appears and then lauded later on - much later on.
Atheist Under Fire for not Saying
Kenny Hess, a senior at Spanaway Lake High School in Washington State, has been removed from TV production assignments for the rest of the year because he omitted the phase "under God" from his recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance during a broadcast. He has apologized, but also doesn't feel that he can be forced to say "under God" if he doesn't want - but school officials aren't budging.
Board Ordered to Apologize to Atheist
In December 2001, Tuscola County commissioners at a Board meeting "shouted down" Anonka, an atheist who was complaining about a Nativity scene erected on the courthouse lawn. That was, to be quite frank. stupid and bigoted - and now a court has ordered the Board to apologize for their juvenile actions.
Earlier News on Atheism and Atheists
Curious about what has been going on with the atheism and atheists both in America and around the world? Atheism doesn't come up very often in the media, but that doesn't mean that there isn't anything to say or to report about. There are very regular stories involving atheists and atheism if you look closely.
