Readers picked Ricky Gervais as the Best Atheist to Follow on Twitter of 2011. This is the first time an international celebrity has been a finalist for this category and while he doesn't tweet exclusively about atheism or atheist-related issues, he does do so somewhat regularly and he does speak out about atheism and related issues often enough.
Ricky Gervais is a comedian, actor, musician, writer, producer, and director. He became most widely known with his television series The Office then later the series Extras. He seems to have first made his atheism clear in a 2007 interview with Kirsty Young for Desert Island Discs, explaining that he stopped believing in gods when he was eight.
In 2008 he was named an Honorary Associate of the National Secular Society and in 2010 he wrote a widely quoted editorial for the Wall Street Journal explaining his atheism. This is perhaps my favorite part:
Why don't I believe in God? No, no no, why do YOU believe in God? Surely the burden of proof is on the believer. You started all this. If I came up to you and said, "Why don't you believe I can fly?" You'd say, "Why would I?"
I'd reply, "Because it's a matter of faith." If I then said, "Prove I can't fly. Prove I can't fly see, see, you can't prove it can you?" You'd probably either walk away, call security or throw me out of the window and shout, ''F—ing fly then you lunatic."
All of the finalists for Favorite Atheist to Follow on Twitter are worth following, so if you are on Twitter you should do so. No matter what you're looking for, one or more of them is sure to fit the bill.
