| Abortion Doctors | |
Abortion is, and for the foreseeable future shall remain, a very serious and divisive issue in the United States. Currently, it is legal - but that legality is deceptive, since it is unavailable in more than 80% of the counties in America. "Legal but unavailable" doesn't create many options.
The current president, George W. Bush, will probably select two if not three Supreme Court justices to the high court. He has already announced that his role models for judges are William H. Rehnquist and Antonin Scalia - two people who have opposed abortion rights for as long as records indicate.
Should similar justices be appointed, it is not inconceivable that abortion rights are eliminated on the federal level. A few, but very few, states are likely to them keep then legal. For that reason, a deeper understanding of abortion and why it is performed would behoove everyone, no matter what side of the issue they stand on.
Two books would be instrumental in that. Both are about abortion doctors: one who was active when abortion was illegal, and one still active today, in a legal but dangerous climate. Why have they done it? What possible reason could they have had to oppose both law and tradition in order to take care of women seeking abortions?
Understanding why people have abortions and why some people would perform abortions adds depth and clarity to the debate. These two books do some of the former and quite a lot of the latter. Two doctors, from two different eras, who have an interesting set of commonalities and differences.
Both doctors exhibit a keen interest in helping women - indeed, improving the lot of poor and/or desperate women plays a large role in their decisions to perform abortions at all. But curiously, the doctor who performed them when it was illegal is not described as fearing for his life in any way - but now that it is legal, the current doctor is afraid.
Taken together, these books can help you gain a deeper understanding about attitudes towards abortion in America and why people are involved.
