For 12/08/99:

In August, 1998, Richard Ganulin filed suit in U.S. District Court arguing that "Christmas is a religious holiday, and the Congress of the United States is not constitutionally permitted to endorse or aid any religion, purposefully or otherwise, or entanglement between our government and religious beliefs." This week, he lost in court. In dismissing the suit, U.S. District Judge Susan Dlott stated that the Christmas holiday did not violate Ganulin's right to equal protection under the law, saying "The court has found legitimate secular purposes for establishing Christmas as a legal public holiday."

It is important to note that the court merely found "legitimate secular purposes" but did not find that Christmas was a secular holiday.

About.com Poll
Should Christmas be recognized by the government as a federal holiday, or is it a private religious holiday?

Christmas is or can be secular and should be recognized.
Christmas is religious and should be treated like other religious holidays - like Good Friday.
I don't know.
