Are you truly committed to equality, liberty, and liberation for all atheists or are you more of an "Uncle Tom" atheist? Would you turn your back on working for real equality in exchange for a few scraps from the tables of religious theists so you can pretend you're being treated as an equal? Would you support increased privileges for Christians in the hope that a few of those privileges might drip down to benefit you personally? You might, and without even realizing it.

When Christians in America insist that children need more religion in their lives and that the absence of state-endorsed religion in places like public schools is the source of America's social problems, remind them about how much good Christianity has been doing for children in Nigeria. Here, the growth of Pentecostalism — an especially superstitious form of Christianity — has led to the equally powerful growth in accusations against children of being witches and warlocks.
These accusations have led to horrific violence perpetrated against innocent children by their own parents and other family members. As little as ten years ago the number of "child witches" was relatively small, though nevertheless a real problem. Popular Pentecostal preachers have in the interim been a primary reason why there are now around 15,000 child witches in just one state alone. This could make even the early modern European witch hunts look like love festival.

Comment of the Week: Relativism vs. Absolute Morality

One popular argument which some religious theists like to use against atheists is the idea that atheism results in "moral relativism" which is incompatible with decency, social order, etc. Theistic religion — and Christianity in particular — are supposed to provide an absolute and secure foundation for objective morality, so we should all convert to Christianity. One of the many problems with this is the fact that it's inconsistent with the Christian theology of the people making this argument. Their own religion require them to believe that morality — and the moral quality of certain behaviors — is very relative.

The complaint about secularists "taking Christ out of Christmas" is a common one today and a rallying cry for Christian Nationalists who promote the War on Christmas. Many religious conservatives say that liberals are trying to take Christianity out of Christmas, but should Christianity even be in Christmas to begin with? There are Christians today who say that it shouldn't. This position used to be much more common and maybe it's a sign of the influence of modern culture that things have changed so much.
