Name: Book of Zechariah (Hebrew: "Yahweh remembers")
Author: Zechariah the prophet
Dates: c. 520 BCE
Book of Zechariah:
Zechariah was one of the "minor" prophets who preached to the Jews returning from
their exile in Babylon. Like Haggai, he told people that they should be concentrating
on restoring the Temple and praising God. Zechariah also advised Jews to prepare
themselves for a coming "messianic age." According to Zechariah, someone from the
House of David would rise up and once again rule over Israel. Many came to expect that
this messiah would be a warrior-king who would defeat the other rival empires, like
Egypt and Persia.
