Biography:
Roger Williams (1603-1683), widely regarded as a troublemaker by his contemporaries, is today remembered as the founder of Rhode Island and a staunch proponent of religious freedom. He was, in fact, among the first in America to articulate the concept of the separation of church and states in opposition to the American tendency to have official, state supported churches. This was, in fact, why people at the time didn't like him and why people today look up to him. Williams was especially principled because, even though he vehemently opposed the religious views of groups like the Quakers, he would never accept the state repressing them and denying them the right to believe differently.
